Summary
"I'm just going to say hello," she lies, sliding out from the booth and letting the click of her boots carry her across the room. The dark red walls make her feel sexy, mature. She channels that, leaning against the bar easily. Frankie is looking, but pretending not to. Lesbian flirting isn't like when she was hanging out in male gay bars. There, a man can walk right up to you and try something. Butches could do that, maybe, but Jas has rarely seen it work.
Jas Fitzjames moves to San Francisco to find herself. A series of snapshots.

Summary
They seem to have opposing shift patterns, but James strategically sidles into the queue next to him in the galley whenever possible, making small talk to a polyester-fleece wearing brick wall. Once, in a moment of weakness, he orders the same thing as Francis, just to be able to point out his good taste. Seated a few tables apart, James accidentally catches his eye as they both spoon creamy veggie bake into their mouths. It’s the most intimate act James has conducted since leaving New Zealand.
James Fitzjames is in Antarctica to collect data for a research project. Will he find the LGBT+ community he seeks, both for his own needs and his professional work?

Summary
“So, um…” Henry starts. “Did you mean it, what you said earlier?”
“About what?” Graham asks, and Henry has to wonder if he’s being intentionally obtuse just to embarrass him.
“About the shag,” he mutters, feeling his face heat up.
“Yeah,” Graham says, entirely sincere. “If you want to.”

Summary
“This year,” James begins with a gesture of her wine glass, “we are going to keep things orderly. No, don’t laugh! Francis will be taking our scores for each country, and we’ll see who wins. You have ten points per country.”
Henry glances at Francis. He’s got a rather battered laptop in his lap, thin framed glasses perched on his nose. Henry wonders if he even knows what a spreadsheet is—isn’t he a handyman or something?
“How do we know he won’t doctor the numbers?” he comments, and feels a surge of satisfaction at the immediate look of affront on Francis’ face.
“There’s a reason I didn’t appoint the job to you,” James replies.

Summary
Stephen has always known exactly who he is, always known he would pursue a career in medicine. He’s never bothered to consider a secondary option. Each time he stumbles through his accomodation after a particularly difficult night shift, he tells himself it will get easier soon. It must. This is what he’s always wanted, and so it will be what he does.
James has no such drive, listlessly deciding that he might be an author, a tree doctor, an academic, a sound technician at the Royal Opera House. Very few career paths have anything to do with his studies.

Summary
An image flashes through Francis's mind, of high-heeled boots and a faux fur coat; red lipstick against white teeth; a strong scent of flowers. "I doubt that he—" he begins, cutting himself off. "She—" he tries again, and trails off, uncertain.
"She is fine," says Thomas, encouragingly.
"—would appreciate my company," Francis finishes, lamely.Or, the one where James has to return to the life she'd thought she'd left behind, and Francis is the only person available to go with them.

It had been a rookie mistake. Sol had glanced sidelong at Graham as they both pissed against the brick wall, and they’d locked eyes in the moments after. Graham had winked.

Summary
James gestures, an over-exaggerated sweep of his hand between them that barely avoids knocking the stem of his glass. “You, me, sat across from each other at a dinner. You look just as miserable now as you did back then.”
“And you’re just as insufferable,” Francis tells him mildly.
“You know, I wanted you even then. I wanted to crawl beneath the table and—” A pause, as if he’s finally remembered where they are. Francis watches him squirm for a moment before deciding to press on.
“And what?”
“I wanted to get under the table,” James starts again, haltingly, “and see what you feel like in my mouth.”
Francis and James attend the fabled New Years dinner party inside the Crystal Palace Iguanodon. James has plans for dessert.

Summary
James, to the surprise of nobody, is apparently an avid fan of otome games.
"I got really into them over lockdown," he tells Francis, unbidden and without shame at 5:34pm on a Friday. "Helped the whole thing feel much less lonely, you know?"
Francis can't think of anything less appealing than playing dating simulators to cope with heartbreak.
Francis is head (and only) chef at Roguelite, a gaming bar in London. He does not play well with others.

Summary
What McDonald does not know is that Erebus men will circle a problem indefinitely unless the option is denied them. Stephen lacks the patience for theatrics - and few perform quite as much as Fitzjames.
"Must there be symptoms to visit a friend?" Fitzjames asks, offering a weak version of his wardroom smile. Stephen reaches for his medical kit.
James Fitzjames is a man who does not seek help.
Work complete, seven chapters to be updated on Fridays.

Summary
“This isn’t sleeping,” is all he comments, laughing quietly again and leaning over to speak into his ear. “You probably don’t even know what you’re doing, do you? You’re too small to know why that feels nice.”
Little Frankie is woken from a nap, and can't get back to sleep.

Summary
The dress fabric is rough against the short hairs shadowing his jawline as Jack presses his mouth to the blood-soaked material. Blood tastes different, depending on the source. But if he concentrates, the undercurrent is always the same.
Jack confiscates a dress from one of his men, and realises any good tactician must understand why a decision is made by getting in the head of the enemy who made it.

Summary
The real relief is when they crest the hill at the observatory, taking a detour to sit at the base of General Wolfe’s statue. On a good day, the sun makes the Thames look actually inviting, a sparkling ribbon snaking behind the old Naval Hospital and the strong masts of the Cutty Sark jutting above the buildings around her. Something in Francis comes loose at the sight, making room in his chest for a peace that James finds difficult to look away from.
Francis only intended to stay one night at Eliot Place.

Summary
As they loop back to the till, James redoubles his efforts and does his best to let all of this slide over him. He manages a laugh at some poor joke John makes, and fancies that it sounds genuine.
“You’ll get all that cleaned up before next time, yes?” John asks, and James nods imperceptibly, his smile practised. By next week, John will have forgotten half of his points and replaced them with new hangups that James cannot predict.
John’s eyes drift past James after nodding his own approval, a clear and quiet dismissal as John sets his attention on the display area.
//
James is the assistant manager at Erebus, a bustling coffee shop on the other side of the road from leftist cafe Terror. The two shops could not be more different. Affectionately known as Coffee shop union AU to get around the pretentious title.

Summary
He had been in the middle of joking around with Collins when it happened, the regular creaking rising to a screech as the ice drove at them from the side. It only pushed them an inch, but in that moment Graham was sure he could feel water pooling at his ankles, soaking into his boots. It stole his breath like a maiden with her corset tied too tightly, and he'd made the excuse of needing to consult with the Commander before stumbling to the closest storage room and leaning against the crates with shaking hands until he was sure there was no immediate danger. No men had cried out in alarm. Erebus was holding steady.

A sprawling character study of my beloved Graham Gore. No dialogue, just anxiety and fruity thoughts.

Summary
"There are over 100 of us. I know not how common such an affliction may be. But if I were to make a guess, sir. I would say at least one or two."
They look at each other then, carefully, like two creatures who are not quite sure if they're in a trap.
"What might the treatment be?" There needs to be a remedy. James has been ignoring this feeling his whole life, but like a fresh pair of boots that never softens, he feels raw when he stops to inspect the rubbing point for damage. There must be something.
--
James contemplates what to wear for Carnival, and learns something new in the process.
