But then she’d jumped in with him, pulling him up to the surface. And then she’d smiled, and she’d splashed him, and then there was just some sort of switch in his mind. Maybe this is okay, he’d thought. Maybe the ocean isn’t just out to get him. Maybe he can live with this.
Since that day, he’s been doing a lot better about being in the water. Really.
Now, though, as the kelp tangles his limbs and his lungs scream for air, he’s not so sure about that anymore.
