He just needed to hold out for a little longer, he could almost hear Danvers crunch the gravel as she got up. Just a few more seconds. Thanos grabbed the red stone off of the gauntlet. There was a bright red flash.
Steve could feel the change before he could see it.
Everything felt duller, in every way. His body was surrounded by the red wisps of the energy from the stone, slowly moving from his head to his feet. Since he was 13, he always figured he'd have to be killed to die and he guessed that was destiny fulfilled. But no. He wasn't dying, at least anymore than he should. Steve knew.
He felt his entire body become lighter, but then also heavier with exhaustion. He fell to his knees, they were smaller than they'd been in years. Steve's lungs began to burn from the dust and smoke.
"I do always regret taking a strong soldier away from the fight" Thanos spoke, "But I have a job that needs to be done, and you're preventing me from completing it,"or
During Endgame, Thanos uses the reality stone on Steve. Reverting him back to his state before he received the serum.

Summary
Bruce probably should have thought twice about turning Steve loose in a world (world-tree?) with four whole new universes in it, really. Especially when there’s no limit on how long Steve can stay in any given timeline. He has an excuse for being a little off his game — two excuses, really, between his new injuries and the still-fresh wound of Tony’s death — but that does not mean Steve is going to do anything that could be described as behaving.
Steve Rogers has six Infinity Stones, an unknown quantity of Pym Particles, and a magic hammer investing him with the power of a demigod. Did anyone really think that that would result in anything but chaos of the highest order?

When Bucky fell from that train, when he slipped through Steve’s fingers, it had felt like the end of the world, a cataclysm whose blast radius was limited to one Steven Grant Rogers. Everyone else, he’d thought, could survive it, even if it hurt them. Steve could not. Steve had not, even if that had proven to be a temporary state of affairs.
Now, Steve’s world doesn’t feel like it’s ending. It feels like it’s beginning again: a violent transformation, a terrible rebirth. It roars through him, hope and horror in equal measure, drowning everything else out.
After the Avengers find a frozen Bucky in an abandoned HYDRA base in Siberia, Steve thinks that everything will be okay now that he has Bucky back, now that he's safe and alive and healing, now that they're together again. But Bucky's road to recovery is long, and Steve and Bucky have fundamentally different ideas about what it means to come home from the war seventy years later than they'd expected to. Those different ideas might even be irreconcilable. Even if Steve has found Bucky, he's going to have to reckon with the ways he's lost himself along the way, or risk losing Bucky forever.
