In a large room, with a long table, sit 14 people. Opposites of one another, from opposite sides of a continent. The tall snowy peeks and the warm slimy water. They are gathered here to speak about their ruler's newly unearthed marriage contract. It goes...as well as you'd think it would!
[Scott dismisses both councils. His people rise at once, chairs scraping back in near-perfect unison. Without being told, they know how to file out. A brief bow to their king, not a word spoken, and they slip silently through the heavy spruce doors. Obedience like a sharpened blade, practiced and seamless.
Codlands’ council, however, does not move like that.
They linger.
A slow unraveling of the meeting’s tight knots, whispers tugging at their ruler’s sleeves, glances and quiet reassurances passed between them. Scott cannot hear their words, only catches the warmth in their voices, the way the Codfather leans down — listening, answering, no doubt smiling beneath that ridiculous mask.]

[“This,” Cod said, voice rasping with the effort to keep it steady, “was found buried in the swamp mud. An old contract. It’s been examined—validated—by Lizzie and her council.” His throat worked as he swallowed, flipping carefully through the pages.
Scott frowned, adjusting his gloves against the table. “Refer to the Ocean Queen with her title in my presence, Codfather.” His patience thinned with each circling word. “And tell me—what does this have to do with me?”
Cod gulped audibly, the sound uncomfortably wet. “It’s… a marriage contract.” He hesitated, then whispered, “Between Rivendell and the Codlands.”]
King Smajor of Rivendell has never liked the Codlands, or the Codfather. But perhaps this agreement can get him closer to becoming the most powerful empire.

Scar gets injured at school and runs into Pearl at the school nurse. She refuses to let him stay the rest of the day, and he refuses to go home. She drags him home with her instead, but it doesn't last long.
[Scar sighs as he drops his hands, rubbing his arm self consciously. Pearl is now in a baggy tee shirt and shorts, smiling at Scar, her hands still on her dresser, ready to grab Scar something. The pit in his stomach and the burn in his throat is back.
‘You know I’m not staying.’ Is what he wants to say. ‘You know I’m going to make an excuse to leave.’ He doesn’t speak. ‘So why are you fighting so hard for me?’ He thinks.
He just shakes his head.]
