Summary
Actually, he thinks, his own fleeting, fading relationships are a symptom of his lifelong Daniel-ism, which not even the Dark Gift could cure. Maybe other vampires found eternal connection as a side effect of immortality, and Daniel, two-divorces-Daniel, estranged-daughters-Daniel, was destined to live endlessly the way he always had. Even without the arcane telepathy, Daniel could see into people’s minds, pluck out the darkest and brightest parts, and know them intimately within hours or within minutes. Then he severs the tie, writes it all down, and moves onto the next.
Things were going more or less the same now.
