Summary
"I can't believe you went for boba without me and you liked it." Buck fakes a faint and falls back into Eddie's shoulder playfully. Eddie smacks at him and grabs him by the waist to hoist him fully upright. May watches the way his hands linger for a moment, and then as if sensing her eyes, he pulls back and slaps them against his waist.
"Are you alright?" Buck looks at Eddie with concern.
May watches Eddie's face panic, and being the wonderful human she is, she falls on the sword instead, "I'm having a gay crisis."
Or: When May's sexuality crisis hits a little too close to home for Eddie the two of them join forces to create May-and-Eddie-Mondays as they navigate their queer identities.

Summary
Eddie reaches a hand, slowly, towards the cat, palm up and open like he was taught to greet dogs, and the beast hisses at him.
“Oh, relax,” he says, rolling his eyes, and inches his hand closer. “I’m bigger than you.”
The cat’s eyes are narrowed into slits, zeroed in on his hand, but she doesn’t hiss again. Eddie’s not sure how she does it, but he gets the distinct impression that she’s doing him a huge favour when she finally lets him get close enough to run gentle fingers over the top of her head.
Her fur is dry and chalky, like she’s got a layer of grime settled on top of her. Eddie’s familiar with the feeling.

Summary
This is all perfectly applicable to friendship. Friendships require effort. Intentionality. Sometimes you have to watch a minute long Instagram video about attracting men to figure out how to get your male best friend to come back to your house and fall asleep on your couch again. Or in your bed. Either one.
Whatever Buck's comfortable with. Eddie's not picky.
Eddie will take whatever proximity Buck is willing to offer and be grateful for it, and if that sounds desperate then fine, it's a little desperate, but it's friend-desperate, which is a completely different thing than regular desperate.
He replays the video and takes mental notes, formulating a plan that is simple: get Buck's attention. Spend more time with Buck. Stop feeling like his ribcage has been hollowed out with a melon baller every time he goes forty-eight hours without hearing Buck laugh.
Easy and straightforward. He’s got this.
Or,
Five times Eddie tries to show Buck how much he misses him; plus the one time he just says it.Series

Summary
“I heard you two were expanding your family! Another little one at Durand. We were so excited when we saw the enrollment paperwork.” She clasps her hands together. “Theo is an absolute joy. Let me show you what he’s been working on.”
Expanding your family.
Buck opens his mouth to redirect — it's a reflex, the correction sitting right there on his tongue. This isn’t the first time they’ve been mistaken for more than two totally platonic best friends who are both men and also raising children together.
It’s right there, polite and practiced: Oh, we’re not actually—
But suddenly Eddie’s hand is on his back. Not his shoulder this time, but lower. A few inches lower than two totally platonic best friends who are both men and also raising children together would justify.
Eddie’s palm presses flat against the base of Buck’s spine, fingers spread wide like he’s anchoring them both to the same spot.
“Thank you so much,” Eddie says. “We’re really proud of him.”
Or: The totally platonic act of raising not just one, but two kids with your straight best friend.

He’s finishing up the dishes from Bobby’s homemade lasagna(he always insists on cleaning up) while Bobby and Athena chat out on the patio. Harry has long since disappeared into his room to text his friends but May is sitting on the floor of the living room with half a dozen bottles of nail polish spread out in front of her.
She looks deep in thought, taking the task of choosing a color very seriously and Buck grins.
“The yellow,” he says, drying his hands on a towel before walking over to where she’s sitting. May looks up at him, surprised, as if she’d forgotten he was there.
She looks back down at the bottles. “Maybe,” she says.
Buck sits on the armchair across from her. “It’s a good color for your skin tone,” he explains.
May raises a single eyebrow at him, eyes scrutinizing him. “What would you know about nail polish mister macho fireman?”

“Hey, Diaz? Take it from someone who’s been there — it’s not as scary as you think it’ll be.”
Eddie frowns. He glances at Buck, as if Buck has any idea what Tommy is talking about. “What’s not?”

Or, Buck is not in love with his best friend, and Eddie is super straight. For sure. Definitely.

“Eddie!” Nash yells repeatedly. “Eddie! Eddie!”
Eddie feels himself turning bright red.
“Wow,” he says after his name is repeated a good half a dozen more times in a row. “You weren’t kidding, huh?”
“He’s been like this all day,” Maddie says with a grin on her face. She shifts Nash in her arms, pointing over at Eddie as she says, “Look who it is, sweetie. It’s Eddie!”
Nash frowns, looking confused. “Eddie?”
Maddie nods. “Yeah, that’s Eddie!”
“Eddie!” Nash yells, reaching for Buck. “Eddie!”

Summary
Eddie realized dimly that his hand was still lifted, phone pressed to his ear, the call still live – Buck’s voice spilling through the speaker, thin and panicked and far too loud:
“…Eddie, what is happening? Talk to me. Eddie.”
He should have kissed him before leaving the house, Eddie thought, as his knees gave out.
He should have kissed him more, period. Every chance he got. In the kitchen, from behind, hands wrapped around his waist. On the couch, during the quiet lull of a movie neither of them was watching. In the parking lot before a shift, just because he could. In the locker room as the bells went off – a good luck charm tucked just out of sight.
He should have stopped acting like there’d always be another time.
Or,
Eddie gets shot. Again.

Summary
Adriana comes crashing into Eddie’s life on a random Thursday afternoon in the middle of spring.
It’s an unexpected knock on his front door, which Eddie opens to find a slightly sheepish woman smiling at him, hair piled into a messy bun on the top of her head, a duffle bag in each hand. The last time he saw Adriana was in El Paso four months ago, when he came to get Chris, finally bring him home, and it takes him a moment, to reconcile seeing his baby sister on his doorstep in LA.
“Ads,” he says, when he finally pulls himself together, tugging her into a hug that has her dropping her bags, clinging back to him like she’s five again, scared after a thunderstorm. “Shit. Hi. What’re you doing here?”
Or: Adriana moves to LA. It would be great, except that Buck starts dating her.

Eddie Diaz: father, veteran, firefighter, gay. It’s that easy. A descriptor, a word that Eddie’s spent his entire life running from.
It’s a fucking relief to realise now that he’s stopped running. The burn in his muscles will linger, but it’s okay. It will serve as a reminder of how far he’s come.
Beside him, Buck huffs a laugh. “I can’t believe you did a honky tonk dance.”
Eddie laughs, startled. “I can’t believe you didn’t."
Or: on the drive back to Los Angeles, Eddie works up the courage to tell Buck the truth.

Summary
If Eddie had been sober, he would have realized it wasn't something to be happy about. But drunk as he was, it had the blood singing in his veins, because Buck was going home with him, not Tommy. Tommy could go fuck himself – or you know, anyone else who was willing, but not Evan Buckley. Because Eddie was a pathetic, sloppy drunk and his best friend had a responsibility to make sure he didn't choke on his own vomit or drown himself in the bathroom sink.

From behind his back, Chris reveals his old, ratty Superman logo shirt. It’s way too small for him now, but, for some reason, he’s never thrown it away.
“This shirt has superpowers,” he whispers to Theo. "It keeps all the bad dreams away. It doesn’t fit me anymore, but I don’t want all the superpowers to go to waste. Do you think maybe you could look after it for me?”
Theo nods emphatically. “Yes,” he whispers. He looks up at him, his tiny face sure and determined. “I can do it, Chris.”
Or, Theo has nightmares. Chris works a hand-me-down shirt-shaped miracle.

When Buck and Eddie planned a vacation with their kids over a year ago, they hadn’t exactly planned on bringing a seven-month-old baby along with them. Surely wrangling three kids can't be too much of a challenge—that is, if it weren't for Christopher's steadily worsening mood.
