Summary

Some things, it turns out, were lost long before the seal broke.
(A story about devotion that outlasts memory, love that cannot touch, and the specific cruelty of finding what you were looking for only to discover that the finding came too late — with a happy ending, eventually, because they have all survived worse than this.)

Summary

Summary
The surrounding buildings are illuminated by the scarlet glow of lamps strung above, hazed by a soft mist. Both ends of the street are consumed by the fog, giving the illusion that it goes on for infinity. Lines of shops sit on the edge, and Wei Wuxian makes out odd trinkets being sold.
A thought slams into him, threatening to topple him over again once he’s on his feet. Nothing hurts, the pain is gone. The injuries he’d had just seemed to vanish.
When he looks up he’s taken aback by the startling sight of a boar glowering over him. No, not a boar he realizes on second glance, but a large muscular man with a boar head.
He makes a sound like a low pig snort, “Puh- damn new ghosts.”

Summary
There is a version of this story where Jiang Cheng lets Wei Wuxian die, where he nods at the council meeting, pledges his disciples, and watches the Burial Mounds burn from a safe distance.
This is not that version.
This is the version where Yanli survives, weaving conspiracies between lullabies, where furious Jiang Cheng drags Wei Wuxian from the Burial Mounds by the collar, where they break a Wen prisoner out of Koi Tower, and where treason is committed to save those drowning in darkness.
Family is not about deserving; it is about showing up when everyone else has left. And the Jin are about to find out what happens when you corner the wrong siblings.
