She froze, absently shushing Taissa’s sound of protest, her straining ears picking up the clank of keys in the dish by the door, followed by the small, ordinary noises that made up the ritual of entering a house. Her mind was racing a mile a minute, panic jittering along her nerves like electricity. One thought in particular bounced and juddered around the edges of her mind.
