The last thing she can wholly say belonged to her was a title that she never even wanted for herself, an inhumane legend of her own making. It’s not something she grabbed with her own hands, not something smeared with her ownership all over in a befitting claim and it’s silly, she feels, how she’s come to this; of this linkage of a possessive noun and the name of someone she could never come to have.
Her Phoebe—Phoebe who shouldn't ever be hers when she belongs to the Sentinel even before she even belongs to herself; and who is a heretic to desire a being so holy and purely devoted to her beliefs that the moment she gained her chance at freedom to do whatever she wants—she uses it to swear every part of her life to serve her God?

Phoebe whines, flustered at the obscenely domestic depiction of someone she’s known to never say such things in her mind.
Her hands are too soft to belong to Zani, too frail to be considered as the perfect match to hers when even their weapons contradicted each other’s lives. Her staff is polished and cleaned every other day to prevent any sorts of obsoletion, something that never touches her opponents while her shield had been beaten and bruised and worn over the years to keep up with the calluses dictating her experience underneath her gloves—they couldn’t be any further apart; their owners couldn’t be any further apart.
It doesn’t stop her from thinking how they belong to her—how they’re the hands she imagines to be touching her now. Zani would know how to touch her, she thinks; she would understand Phoebe’s body better than she does, she’s always been so good at everything—whether it’s crunching deadlines or tugging at the strings in her system that always causes her heart to beat one point five times faster than it normally does, what would make this different?

“I bit you.” Gigi blinked innocently. “Is that illegal?”
“Very,” Fauna said. “Highest of crimes, worst of betrayals.”
“Forgive me?” Gigi strained against the hand in their hair. Though it wasn’t that strong of a grip, pulling away from it still left a pleasant sting on their scalp. They pressed a soft kiss to the bite mark.
Fauna made a noise of deepest thought. “I don’t know if that’s enough,” she said slowly.
Gigi kissed the mark again, and this time let her tongue loll out to rasp it up to Fauna’s hip. Fauna’s fingers scratched at the back of Gigi’s head as she nosed underneath Fauna’s shirt to get at her tummy, spreading butterfly kisses over the soft fuzz of its expanse. Fauna pulled her back out from under it, and Gigi felt a little bit like a chastised cat getting held by the scruff.
“That’s better.” Fauna shifted her hand to cup the side of Gigi’s face. “Any other ideas?”
