When asked about his housing plans after signing a 3 year contract with the Outlaws in July, Stackhouse shrugged and stated that he intended to continue living with Hicks.’”
Landon lets out a laugh. “I sure did say that. I did mean it in more of a ‘why would I stop living with my boyfriend’ kind of way though.” He pauses for a moment, taking a sip of his water, before adding, “We really do need to figure out some kind of rent situation though. If I’m living here year-round, it feels weird to let you still be paying for the whole place.”
“I make way more than you,” Casey argues, pouting. “Plus I literally own the place outright, there’s no mortgage or anything, so it would just be going into my pocket or whatever. Which is stupid. You’re my boyfriend, my boyfriend lives in my house.”

Phantoms Defenseman Returns To Practice in Non-Contact Jersey
The headline splashes across his screen, along with a familiar picture from last season of #71 mid-shot, Alex’s usually stony game face cracked by the hint of a smile, like he knew the shot was going to find the back of the net before it even left his stick. Bobby remembers Julie coming into practice the day after that game with the picture on her phone to show them. Apparently, Alex is a hard guy to get a good shot of during games, so this one has stuck around.
Bobby just likes that Alex looks happy in it. Hopefully he’s happy now, finally being back.

Phantoms practice then. Carly does like watching the games on TV with Jaden (and in person the one time Willie had gotten the whole family tickets as a present last season) but the pain in her gut takes the appeal out of standing on the hard rubber floor.

Alex nods, unsure as to where this is going. A part of him wonders if it has to do with their debut album, which was released publicly less than two weeks ago and has been exploding all over the place, but that seems like something Julie would show to Luke first, or all three of them together. Why would she single him out for album stuff?
“So that kinda happened with Finally Free,” Julie tells him, sitting down on her bed and flipping open her laptop.
Alex’s dead heart stops. Because that’s his song. His bandmates helped him bring it to life and everyone out in the world likely thinks about it as Julie’s since she sings it, but he wrote it.

“What about this,” Luke continued, not even noticing his bandmate’s words. “I see you in my mind, we know we can’t hide,” he sang, glancing over at the boys for feedback.
Alex groaned and forced himself to his feet. Those lines didn’t even make sense. Clearly it was going to take more than words to pull Luke out of his writing stint. “Leave it till morning,” he suggested, placing a hand over the paper his friend was writing on to stop him. “Then Julie can help you, and you’ll be more rested so your lyrics will actually make sense. You can’t see people in your head.”
That last bit finally seemed to grab Luke’s attention. “What do you mean, of course you can,” he said, confused. “Like drawing a mental image.”

Bobby had always been a drag on his friends; always needing help with his homework, never quite managing to cook on his own without messing something up, constantly rushing out of band practice early or coming in late because he was working shifts at the little diner around the corner to offset the costs of having two, sometimes four, boys living off a budget set up to support one.
And he was never really helpful enough to compensate for the extra effort his friends had to put in to have him around. He only knew the bare minimum as far as first aid, so he couldn’t do much when Reggie came to band practice with new scrapes and bruises that he swore just came from his own clumsiness, outside of offering bandaids and ice packs and ibuprofen. Sitting still and holding Alex’s hand was all Bobby was good for when the drummer had panic attacks.
And Luke… Bobby had never known how to help Luke.

Alex frowns. Practice is like... the only thing he’s here for most of the time. Curiosity piqued, he lets Willie guide him through the familiar corridors of the rink's backrooms, completely bypassing the locker room where Alex knows his spare sweater and pads are.
As they approach the rink, he hears the familiar scritch of skates on ice, the tap of sticks on pucks, the whistle of a coach. But it's all much softer than he's used to. Smaller. Once they come around the corner and into view of the ice, he realizes why.
"Introducing the Los Feliz Bobcats," Willie says in a hushed imitation of the announcer at the arena.

He focuses on his breathing while he slips inside through the staff entrance. He counts each notch carefully as he laces up his skates. He centers himself on the music in his earbuds instead of the pounding in his chest as he approaches the rink.
Only, the ice isn’t empty.
Alex feels his chest tighten for a different reason entirely as the figure on the ice lands a complicated looking jump on one foot. It’s difficult to make out the face of the skater from here, but Alex knows who it is.

Alex shakes out his arm as he waits for Sasha in the loading dock before the game. It feels weird to be here and not playing, but Sasha had asked him to help him warm up, claiming no one else on the team knew how to pitch. Luke and Nick are already in the open area behind him, kicking a soccer ball into the air between them, and Alex hears Cinna’s familiar footfalls coming down the hall from the locker room to join them.
He distracts himself from the itch to join the game by testing a soft pitch against the cement wall. It bounces right back to him and he fires it off again the second it’s in his grasp. It’s not really a fastball, there’s not nearly enough space for that in here. But Sasha likes them quick and varied, claims it helps him loosen up for catching pucks. And hey, who’s Alex to argue with a guy who’s been stopping pucks since Alex was in high school?

Normal that his fingers tremble on the laces of his skates and he barely hears Flynn’s quib when he emerges from the locker room and that the squeak of someone’s skate guards on the mat scrapes at the inside of his eardrums and that the gate seems to fall away from his hands when he pushes it open.

Even if the ice under his skates trembles and the lights are burning his eyes and something is pulling tight around his ribs and he can’t breathe and his vision is going blurry and his head aches and he’s going to die because there’s no air in his lungs and no matter what he does there never will be-

Julie is half aware of Flynn and one of trainers checking over injuries to ensure they’re not going to get aggravated by the guys’ treks home. Jack is rewrapping an ankle brace he’s been wearing since an unlucky trip in the second. Reggie is standing by the mirror, replacing the bandage over a scrape across his jaw from a puck he took to the face in the third.

Alex snags a loose puck from the edge of the pile and twisting around for a shot into the open net. It slides in just clear of the post. A bit wide of where he’d intended but fine.
Sasha, the team’s brick wall of a veteran goaltender, slides into the net and starts fielding shots. Alex pauses next to the puck pile and passes shots to Luke, Reggie, Nick, and Cea and Cinna, the team’s top defensive pair. Luke slows down on his way behind the net to wave at the various fans holding signs with his name or number. There’s always a bunch. Reggie has a fair share too. Alex rolls his eyes and takes his next shot (just barely blocked by Sasha’s pad) before swinging around the back end to nudge Luke back into practice. Luke protests but Alex just rolls his eyes and continues with his lap.
Each moment is absolutely normal.
As long as Alex ignores the opposite net.
He knows he can’t avoid it forever. Finding the back of the net is kind of the goal here (no pun intended). But maybe, if he pretends he doesn’t know who is in the other net tonight, he can get through at least his first shift without worrying about him.

It’s a familiar routine. Get to work an hour or so before the opening shift starts. Check in with Dante upstairs so he knows they’re here. Lace up his skates and throw his warm up playlist on through his earbuds before getting a good 45 minutes of practice in for their next comp before having to do their actual job. It’s kind of exhausting, especially on mornings like this when they worked a game the night before, but it works. It keeps them doing what they love with a roof over their head.
It’s exhausting, but Willie would rather lose some sleep than give up skating. So here he is, more mornings than not
Only when Willie reaches the ice, the gate is already sitting half open. And there’s a set of hockey pads on the bench beside it. And there’s a blond guy sitting curled up against the wall, trembling.
