“I wish I could stop mourning you,” she admits into the empty air and feels the guilt grip her throat like an icy hand when he stills against her.
“And I wish I knew how to love you,” he breathes in reply, and she knows what he means. He’s wishing, not for the first time, that he could love her in the way he did decades ago—be that same boy for her sake, but she can’t ask that of him. She doesn’t want that, anyway.
