“Be thankful you’re no beta, child,” his mother had said tiredly, “it’s to the lap of luxury, with you.”
Those were the last words she’d ever said to him. He’d been hastily scrubbed, dressed, and deposited on the back of their hay wagon, set for the city gates. He glumly watched his hovel home disappear behind the hilly country road, clinging tight to the side of the wagon, that timeworn wood he was so familiar with. Nothing would be familiar to him anymore, his future held only uncertainty. He bit his lip, then let it go. Bitten, plump red lips were pretty, he didn’t want to be pretty anymore.
