Even as they got older, Livio still feels the need to be at his side. It's only when he crawls into his bed does he slowly piece together his feelings for his best friend.

Summary
“We can go to festivals,” Ritsu says, once they’re alone again. “We can do that in the future, too. I know we always go anyway, but...”
“But on a date,” Mob says confidently. “Yes – yes, I get it. I understand.” People always go on dates to festivals: he sees them every year, boys and girls always hand in hand, always paying for more turns at the games to try to win prizes for their date who always stands waiting and giggling by the stall. Mob never wins any prizes and Ritsu never giggles and neither of them is a girl but they can still have a date at a festival, if they want – everyone else does it, after all. They can be as normal as they want, in the future.

Summary
Silence. Is it strange to speak to a cat? But this cat is his brother, and even as a human his brother was never the talkative type: speaking to Shigeo with no response is nothing unusual for Ritsu. So he should speak to him, Ritsu resolves; he should talk a lot, to make Shigeo feel comfortable at home again, to help him not feel self-conscious about being a cat now, just in case that’s how Shigeo’s feeling, in case self-consciousness is something which cats in general are capable of feeling.
It's no one's fault; it's just the way life is. You find love before your timer runs out, or you turn into an animal - birth, death, taxes, animal transformation as a consequence of failure to find requited romance: life's four constants.

Ritsu's thoughts aren’t sticking; she can’t string them together anymore. It feels better when she’s touching Shige and it feels unbearably worse when she’s not touching Shige. “No,” she says again. “No, no - please. Aren’t you hot? I’m burning, I’m—”
Abruptly she goes for the first toggle of her sister’s bright blue winter coat. Shige steps back, startled: the wall is behind her. Ritsu manages to yank open the second toggle too – and then Shige closes her hands over hers, to stop her, and it’s better at once, it’s all better. Ritsu sighs in deep blissful relief and forgets all about opening the coat; instead she twists her grip so she can hold her sister's hands properly, linking their fingers, pressing the damp heat of her bare palms against the perfect cool of Shige’s.

Maybe the reason it feels so urgent is because they've finally found the proper way to be: the right amount of closeness, the most overwhelming kind of love. It's right to do this with Ritsu and not with anyone else, because Mob feels this way about Ritsu and not about anyone else. He wants to feel this way with Ritsu, and not with anyone else; he wants Ritsu to feel it only with him, as well.

His brother after work usually smells like incense and green tea. Today the rain has washed away all traces of the hours he’s spent with Reigen, and Shigeo smells only like himself.
Uncontaminated, thinks Ritsu, and feels a little guilty. Not guilty enough to tell himself he didn’t mean it, though. Shigeo with no evidence clinging to him that he’s anyone’s but Ritsu’s is the way that Ritsu likes him best.

He tells Shigeo about a test he did well in and another he did less well in, and about how it is competitive here, like everyone says it is, like everyone at home had warned him it would be every time they learned he was applying to Matcha University, but it’s competitive in a good way, a friendly way, not a damaging way, because everyone here wants to work hard and do their best and they want everyone around them to do well, too – competitive, but supportive; so it’s good, it’s all good, and it’s all new and different but it’s good. Everything is good. All of Ritsu's stories are pleasant and mild and nice because everything about Ritsu's life is pleasant and mild and nice as well, and all his stories have been told so many times they’re polished smooth by repetition: he offers them up to his brother with well-practised ease.

Ritsu is a good brother, so of course Ritsu loves him. Of course Ritsu wants to spend time with him; of course Ritsu wants to be close to him. Mob wants to be close to him, too – of course he does. They’re family, and that’s what being family means: loving each other, and spending time together, and being close to each other. Mob knows that, and he knows that Ritsu knows it too; but that doesn't make it any easier to shake the strange, uneasy feeling that what Ritsu wants from Mob is something Mob has never wanted in return.
