“Welcome, everyone! Please settle down and let us start. ” Commander Novag, a medium-sized, smooth eridian, boomed. Their voice was without a doubt the most imposing, carrying a song of authority and power, with deep base notes.
“I have been informed by navigator Polius that there is a foreign body heading towards our ship.” At that, most eridians started chittering and fidgeting, singing notes of fear, anxiety.

“Foreign body?! What does that mean, question?”
“Can’t we just navigate away, question?"
    “So it’s an asteroid.”
“Is it dangerous, question? What do we do, question?!”
“We should not let fear invade our inner thoughts- let us focus and think, not about the bad, but about the opportunity this shall grant us. Everything is but a test that we should take in stride with wit and-”
    “Oh, honk the hell up!”
    “Excuse me-?!”
    Honk- scratch, screech!

“So, how do we deal with it, question?”
    “I say we investigate, statement.”

Or, how eridians actually discovered radiation before going to save their sun, and Rocky's crew didn't die.

Every screen in the room blazed with the same breaking news feed. An alien voice had just asked for him by name on live television.

“Mr. Grace?” little Jamal whispered from the front row, eyes huge behind his glasses. “Is that really you they’re talking about? Like, you you?”

Ryland’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. His heart slammed against his ribs like it wanted to escape and hide under the desk with the class hamster. He was just Mr. Grace. The guy who drew cartoon planets on the board, who stayed late helping kids glue together messy dioramas of the solar system, who once spent an entire lunch period comforting a sobbing girl because her goldfish had “gone to the great fishbowl in the sky.” He graded spelling tests on vocabulary words like photosynthesis and asteroid. Aliens did not know his name. Aliens did not ask for science teachers.

The marker slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor.

A Rocky POV of Project Hail Mary, but add in a sprinkle of originally named astrophages, petrova lines, language barriers, trauma recovery, and extra, extra worldbuilding. Includes pre- and post-canon!

One day, his strumming was not answered.

The silence that answered his one verse of song was horrible and grating. Incomplete. Empty. A sick, horrible fear built up inside him.

(He was going to die out here. Alone.)

    ***

"Iz huhg," Grace sniffled out, sucking back in moisture from his noze, too. There was moisture and water and everything all over the place. "Huhg meens grayt, grayt, grayt affekshun."

"Oh," he said tentatively. Another hewmin thing! He shuffled closest to the wall Grace was huhging and leaned in. "Oh. Am I doing correctly, hmm?"

"Yis," Grace sighed out, calming down. He still leaked, though.

Oh, well. Leaky hewmins were his favorite, after all.

    Summary

In linguistics, a false friend is a word in a different language that sounds similar to a word in your own, but differs significantly in meaning. No word in any Eridian language could possibly be mistaken for English. But Erid absolutely has false friends.

In his right mind, Grace would easily identify the mistaken assumptions inhibiting his integration on Erid. They are:

1: A molecular biologist and a sapient rock can cobble together translation software that reflects the etymological nuance of an entire alien language.
2: Eridians are enough like humans to have an area 51 and look forward to using it.

Unfortunately, Grace hasn’t been in his right mind in years.

Or: a ‘Return to Erid’ story where Grace struggles to touch down alone.
