In her heart of hearts, Nami knows that she wants too much: that she’s too much. She’s been this way for as long as she can remember, even when she was just a tiny child chafing against poverty and the shoreline of an island that seemed to grow smaller and smaller with each passing year. The voracious beast inside her was quieter before Arlong educated her on the true price of not having enough, but it’s always been a part of her and has been clawing at the inside of her ribcage and howling for more ever since. Strangers are the safest choice for Nami to let herself be so hungry with because she’s gone by morning, long before her neediness can swallow them whole, so she can take from them without an ounce of guilt and she tells herself that it’s enough.

She presses her back against the door, heart stuck in her throat, legs weak. She opens her mouth to explain but no words come and she stares silently at Gaoshun.

A sharp pain pierces her chest. Her knees buckle and the room sways in front of her blurry vision.
Her distress must be visible as Lady Taomei crosses the room to catch her arm. “Why don’t you sit down for a minute, hm? My, you’re shaking.”

“Did you eat buckwheat?” He asks sternly.
Maomao doesn’t remember ever telling Lahan about her sensitivity to buckwheat nor ever mentioning it in his presence. His extensive knowledge of her can only thus be the result of his freak tendencies, or worse—that monocled weirdo’s.
Yet in that fleeting second, with her burning throat and her trembling hands, annoyance doesn’t come to her.
“I don’t– I don’t know,” she says, breathless.
“How can you not know what you put in your own mouth?!”
There it is. The everlasting exasperation she feels thrumming through her veins whenever her abacus-face of a cousin finds himself in her immediate vicinity. She goes to hit his shin but loses her balance as a new coughing fit racks her body.
Or: Maomao accidentally ingests buckwheat, and it's not even an assassination attempt. Rude.

They have her family, and she can’t pay enough to protect them. Bellemere, Luffy, Usopp, Nojiko, Chopper, Zoro, Robin, Sanji, Franky, Brook… one or two or all of them, staring down a gun. And it should be laughable – she’s seen several of them tank bullets before, slice them in half, bounce them right back at the barrel – but in this moment, a gunshot feels like the end of everything. A tax, a bail, a bounty, and she never has enough.
They look at her, there’s a horribly familiar laugh, and then…
Well. Then she wakes up.
(Nami has a nightmare, followed by a late night conversation in the kitchen. Bonding ensues.)

Ben puts the Omnitrix back on, and she stares at it in hatred- only for a moment though, just one moment- and wishes that her cousin had never found it. Because now Ben isn’t a fan of being held, not anymore, and the reason for it lies in that stupid watch.
(That stupid watch that saved the world, that makes Ben feel safe even as it puts him in danger.)
But she says nothing, nothing until late one night Ben calls her, and his voice is shaky and a little too high to be normal, breathing coming too fast and jokes falling a little flat, and she remembers the conversations at three AM in the old Rustbucket and this time she gets them for what they are.
She hums, says quietly, “Ben, you’re okay, you’re okay. You’re safe.”
And Ben laughs, except it sounds a bit like crying, and he’s murmuring about how sorry he is, about how he usually calls Grandpa Max, but that Grandpa Max is gone and he doesn’t know what to do-
“It’s fine.”
It’s not- her kid cousin being too terrified to be alone in the dark in his own room will never be okay- but she doesn’t say that. Just hums again, quietly, and says, “It’s fine, Ben,” and prays that it will be so soon.
