The town square had always felt too small for the kind of nights it tried to hold. Lanterns were strung from one end of the street to the other, their warm light trembling faintly in the evening air as though they, too, were caught up in the restless hum of conversation. Music pulsed from the center stage where a DJ stood behind a clutter of wires and speakers, filling every corner of the square with something lively and a little too loud, the kind of sound that made people forget themselves just enough to be someone else for a while. The scent of food drifted lazily through the crowd, the sweet and savory mixing into something familiar, something comforting, something that belonged entirely to this place. Even the scent of alcohol and smoke was comforting.
