Jason never heard the gunshot.
He felt it instead—hot and brutal—tearing through his back and knocking the breath from his lungs. His body jerked forward, boots scraping against the wet wood of the dock. Somewhere close, too close, Benny cried out. Jason didn’t have to look to know how bad it was.
Snow touched his face.
Soft. Weightless.
Jason frowned, confusion threading through the fog in his head. Snow didn’t belong here. It didn’t belong with docks and gunfire and the smell of blood and saltwater. It didn’t make sense.He tried to open his eyes.
They wouldn’t move.
“Jason.”
The voice broke through the darkness, faint but urgent.
“Jason, please—wake up.”
His heart lurched.
That voice—
“No,” he tried to say, but nothing came out.
