"Someone's feeling brave today," Vi says, twiddling her very large thumbs together. The machinery hums as it always does, a low blue glow splashing against the damp walls of the alleyway.
"Could say that about you," the thug says, muzzle of a sawn-off shotgun floating about as he gesticulates. "Coming all the way down here without backup."
Such poor muzzle discipline, she can almost hear the sniff in Caitlyn's voice in her head. She smiles, can't help it. "What can I say," Vi grins, baring her canines. "Sometimes we don't need the scary one."

"They called you a traitor," Caitlyn blurts out and suddenly Vi is back in her skin.
She's back in her skin, sitting in on the table in front of Caitlyn who's got her hand around a whiskey bottle. Her good eye is swelling up after taking the hit. Vi isn't the only one with metal inside them, that much is for sure. She blows out a breath and Caitlyn relaxes just fractionally. She can see Vi is back in her skin. It's weird to be seen so clearly by someone she hasn't known all that long, but it's one of the few weird things that Vi can get over.
"Yeah, well, they can call me whatever they want," Vi dismisses. "Who cares what they think?"
The Last Drop's re-opening does not go according to plan.

Garnet took a breath. “She used to know Sapphire, before the Gem War. She was the only friend she had, back then. Then, after she met Ruby, and I was formed, we were on opposite sides of the war. We met in battle, and I—we tried to show her that Sapphire was still there…”
Garnet swallowed. She was finding it harder than she expected to say all of this out loud.
“But she hated fusion. She thought it was wrong. It didn’t matter to her that it was Sapphire. So, we fought. I bubbled her, and put her here…”
“And you haven’t un-bubbled her since?” Steven guessed.
Garnet nodded subtly. “I wanted to try to talk to her again, but I couldn’t be sure that I could get through to her. So, I waited.”
Steven frowned.
“Are you done waiting?”

But this is real. Almost terrifyingly real. It would have scared her, back then, made her reach out to test the illusion like she hadn’t ever dared to, knowing her knuckles would meet nothing but empty air. But this vision casts a shadow, catches the warm light of the bunker, sports tiny imperfections of exhaustion and effort her drunken dreams hadn’t ever seen. It’s real. She’s looking right at her.
“Sorry to say,” Caitlyn’s voice goes softer, lower, “You’ve grown a bit predictable.”
She blows air through her nose as the last syllable leaves her lips honey-smooth, and Vi somehow manages to recognize humour in her tone, but Caitlyn’s arms are still crossed, she isn’t moving, but-
She’s smiling, she’s gorgeous, she’s playful and she’s right here.
She’s here. She’s come back to me.
And Vi lunges to capture the lips of the girl who’d once held her hand through a safe and warm sleep.
In a bunker far below ground, Vi is lost, has lost it all- until those beautiful blue eyes find her again.
