J.J. reminded himself every morning to be thankful. To be thankful for life, to be thankful for being a successful defensive man on a successful hockey team, to be thankful for his family and most importantly - to be thankful for the brothers he accumulated by playing the sport that he loves. However, in this continuous basking of thankfulness and gratitude, J.J. has sometimes found himself feeling empty. He was told many times that he was a complex puzzle, full of excitement and whimsy but very hard to put together. On many days, he felt completed; all the pieces matching together - creating a picture of beauty, wonder, and sometimes grace. But there were plenty days where he felt the piece or pieces were missing. He sought day in and day out to figure that out.

Shane Hollander was considered one of the calmest guys in the league, the least confrontational. He hardly got into fights. If there was an all-out brawl, he would join in to protect his guys, but he wasn’t an instigator, except for the one time he truly tried to fight Scott Hunter. And it was Scott Hunter for godsake. He gave media trained answers and hardly argued with refs. His social media was clean cut with no controversial posts.
But that didn’t mean that Shane didn’t get angry. Wouldn’t defend the people he loved. He knew how to chirp back. He played hockey his whole life and knew how to throw a punch. Maybe he wouldn’t try it against an enforcer or anything, but he could hold his own if he wanted. It’s also not like his husband didn’t spend multiple hours after they got outed making sure that Shane could handle all the extra attention they were about to receive on the ice.
Five times Shane Hollander defended the people he loves, plus one time they defended him.

Shane smiled as he typed a response, then settled back on Ilya’s chest. “You and my mom have to meet up while you’re in town, Sveta. You’d get along so well. You should sit together at the Admirals game.”
Sveta hesitated. She’d briefly met the Hollanders at Ilya and Shane’s wedding, but they were so swarmed by people offering them congratulations that she hadn’t really talked to them. If it had been Ilya who asked, she would have laughed at the idea. “Really, Ilyusha? You want to introduce me to your in-laws? Are you going to tell them about all the times we hooked up? All the clubs we’ve been to together? How much vodka we used to drink together?”
But it was Shane who asked, and Sveta had grown to understand just why it was so hard for Ilya to ever say no to him. He was so earnest and sweet. Shane made her best friend happy, and if this would make him happy, she could do it. Probably.
“Yeah, that sounds nice,” she said quietly.
Or, Sveta believes she is ill-equipped to impress her best friend's husband's parents. She is unfamiliar with Yuna Hollander's game.
