    През 1868 г. свободата изглежда като далечна мечта за младия Христо Ботев. В суровата късна есен той броди из непознатия Букурещ, търсейки единствено подслон. Там среща дрипавия странник Христо Карловеца, и двамата, свързани от бедността и мизерията, споделят сандък със слама в изоставена мелница на края на града.
    Един ден, в читалището „Братска любов“, самият Левски — тогава още непознат за историята — надниква тайно в тефтера на Ботев. Пламенните стихове на „На прощаване в 1868 г.“ го запленяват. Двамата разменят само няколко думи и също толкова погледи, но усещат, че съдбата ще ги събере отново.

    Цялото произведение е силно вдъхновено от "Христо Ботьов. Опит за биография" на Захари Стоянов, като по-късно са използвани и сведения от "Васил Левски. Биография" на Иван Унджиев и "Масонската ложа и Братството на Левски" на Румен Василев.
