Summary
The Hail Mary lands back on Earth carrying a middle school teacher and the alien microorganism that will save the world. Thousands of miles away, Eva Stratt watches her lead scientist kiss the ground through a grainy TV screen. Deep in prison with bruises littering her skin, she thinks it's all right that she'll die here, because humanity will persevere. Her job is done, so the rest of her life doesn't matter in the grand scheme. She deserves the hell she lives in.

"Ryland wakes up as the retrieval crew drags him out of the remains of the Hail Mary. He doesn’t know if he should be delirious with joy or dread. Who knows how the world has changed in his absence? Hell, he didn’t know how it changed when he was still living there. He always looked to Stratt to fill him in on the important details.
Mind hazy as he feels his body being dragged aboard a vessel, he lets his thoughts drift to Stratt. God, he misses her. Even though she’s the person who sent him on that mission to die, he misses her. He spent years by her side, basically her second. Her lapdog, as some crew members had joked."

In which Ryland Grace has decided to return to Earth and discovers how much has changed in his absence. Eva Stratt is in prison, and he wishes she weren't. She'd have a fifteen-step plan ready for him on how to navigate being Earth's savior. He finds existing without her to be more difficult than he bargained for, so he decides to do something about it.

He trusted her. He wanted to help her.
She tried to make herself believe, again, that this was ill advised. That it would sabotage the project.
She was steadier, had better concentration. She could afford to spend a few hours only thinking of a single other human being who needed help with meeting his needs, and who then would look at her with that stare, that utterly and honestly impressed gaze. She could hardly bare it, most times. It was too much trust, and it scared her still. She wasn’t scared of the world trusting her, because she didn’t doubt that she was competent and driven enough to see the Hail Mary through. But this man, a single person, not a number, not a vague recollection, giving her that same magnitude of trust, was unsettling.
She had gotten attached, it was undeniable.It was helping. Perhaps, it would be the thing that carried the project to its end.

“What are you talking about?” Grace's fingers played quick chords as he spoke. He didn’t even look as he did it, but it did not make them any less purposeful.
“Discussing possible reasons why Tau Ceti is not infected while other stars are,” Eva replied deftly. “I would invite you to join, but we were just finishing—”
“Oh, that’s easy.” His hand twisted a knob, and the notes came out sharper. “It is infected—Petrova Line and everything.”
In Grace's opinion, dreaming about time traveling is no excuse for getting out of practice with his Eridian. To the rest of the Petrova Taskforce, it seems a bit odd that their resident Astrophage expert has suddenly taken to carrying a keyboard around and playing it whenever he speaks. Eva Stratt resolves to figure out what is going on.
