Merlin hates it when there are visiting nobles in Camelot.
He hates the frantic scrubbing that starts days before their arrival—servants on hands and knees polishing stones no one will think to look at, tapestries beaten free of dust that will settle again by morning, silverware counted and recounted as though a missing spoon might spark a war.
He hates the way the castle stops feeling like home.
And he especially hates Arthur during these visits.

Arthur caught his sorcerer’s eye again. “If Emrys did have a simple, human identity, you wouldn’t have any suspicion who it could be, at all?”
“I wouldn't, I’m afraid.” Merlin shrugged one shoulder, seeming somewhat defeated. “I’ll look into it.”
Once, years ago, Arthur had been sure he could tell when Merlin was lying through his teeth. How frustrating it was to know that couldn’t be further from the truth.Or: In a fixed-it post-canon, word begins to get out about the godlike sorcerer Emrys who will aid the Once and Future King to unite all of Albion. This, of course, results in all the leaders of Albion beginning their attempts to win the elusive Emrys’ favor, in order to be chosen as his prophesied King.
Even as his Court Sorcerer, Merlin lives to antagonize Arthur and decides to inform the world -as Emrys- that he has already chosen his King, in a... less-than-conventional way.(Can be read standalone from the series.)

Fabian hisses in pain when Riz presses a gauze pad against a particularly nasty cut on his side. “I think we all wish that. What was Aguefort thinking?”
“That he could get a bunch of kids out here to handle this instead of doing it himself, I imagine,” Adaine answers. “You sure you’re okay, Riz? Kristen’s right, you took way more hits than normal.”
There’s lots of words on the tip of his tongue. I’m fine, of course, but they didn’t believe it the first two times and he doubts they will the third. And, more bitter than he intends, Yes, no thanks to Fabian. Except that’s not fair, because he’s supposed to be able to dodge and hide and do his job without help, and Fabian was just keeping the people in the front safe. So Riz shouldn’t need bardic inspiration; not today, not ever.

It was smooth, and soft, and as the faint smell of lavender hit his nose Riz realized with a jolt of horror that the thing pressed up against his face was Kristen’s bare chest, and that it was wet because he had completely covered it in drool.

Harry Potter wished he was used to the way people looked at him, but the public's glares of awe, pity, and more recently, disbelief, still burned the back of his head all the same. Nevertheless, he'd like to think he had gotten pretty good at pretending they didn't affect him. One dark set of eyes, however, never failed to shatter his mask with nothing more than a passing glance. Yet, something deep in Harry’s brain, a phantom left to rot in a cupboard under the stairs, wanted nothing more than to reach out and befriend the other scarred boy.
