"It is not that the Eldar need the torchlight and lamplight to see. But they have never yet walked in the darkness like this, never for so long, never without the knowledge that just behind the mountain ridge, just outside the thicket of a woodland, just beyond the wall is the pure, glorious Light of the Trees. Something that is now gone forever."
What does it take to embark upon a journey into the darkness when the Light is no longer? A First Age story, focusing on Finrod and his family and covering the time from immediately after the Darkening of Valinor to the return of the Noldor to Middle-earth. A canon-compliant gap-filler, consistent with my other stories, i.e., the characters and the storylines are the same.
This story is a gift to Markquiaki, inspired by her amazing art piece I was so lucky to claim (slide #80)! It can be admired here.

Summary
When the kinslayers bring death and destruction to Sirion, two sets of brothers meet in the midst of the burning Havens.
Elrond and Elros, the young half-elven princes, are taken captive and brought across Beleriand by the figures of their worst nightmares. Maedhros and Maglor, oathbound and dispossessed, haunted by their crimes, find themselves having to care for the children whose home they laid ruin to. In the cold halls of Amon Ereb, it turns out that not everything is as it looks, that good can come from evil, and that even the deepest divides can be bridged.
In which Elrond and Maglor tell their story, from enemies to family, from the kinslaying at the Havens to the rise of Gil-Estel on the western sky.
