He’s indirectly shutting down without realizing it— unable to function without being haunted by the horrors of the Down Under. He hasn’t slept since then, and refuses to come out of his room. He.. knows they're worried, but can't care less, in fear of discovering everything was another lie again.
So when a thunderstorm moves in, and a Regect comes out, knocking at his bedroom door asking to be sheltered from the impending weather outside (and maybe loneliness at this point, Z doesn’t know), he at least has a bit of pity left to let him in.
On the condition he stays 20 feet away from him. No, thirty. Nope, nevermind, he just wants the dumbass to shut up and not snore.

Summary

Summary
Kakashi has yet to come up with a reason why he'd decided that Itachi's life was worth saving, now sitting next to his unconscious body in the Konoha Hospital.
It is only when Itachi wakes, soul seemingly halfway out of his body already, that he is forced to face the severity of what he's done.
Kakashi is there when he first opens his eyes, foggy and distant and distinctly exhausted in a way he has never seen from Itachi before. Eyelids heavy, he doesn’t move for long seconds, staring beyond the ceiling, chest rising and falling so subtly Kakashi is almost tempted to uncover his sharingan to make sure he is breathing at all.
He’d always had a penchant for staring at nothing, lost in his own Tsukuyomi of consciousness. Kakashi realizes now that this was likely due to the weight Itachi had put on his own shoulders, a weight greater than anyone had been given the right to know. Itachi had been haunted by ghosts still unknowable in every sense of the word ever since the moment Kakashi had met him, long ago.
(AU where the Konoha crew ressucitated Itachi at Kakashi's insistence, right after Tobi takes Sasuke with him.)
