But when the Doctor decides to save him –against his will– the Master has to adjust to his new life imprisoned onboard the TARDIS. It's going about as well as you’d expect, when he suddenly contracts a mystery illness on top of everything else. There was a proper wince then; the slightest narrowing of eyes and flinching of limbs that jolted the Doctor’s body. The Master drank in the sight like a man starved.
“That kills you, doesn’t it?” The Master asked, almost breathless. “Being compared to me. Being told we’re the same. You’ve spent so long trying to tell yourself otherwise, but you know it. You know, deep down, we’re the same.”

The Doctor can finally have a peaceful, happy life … except of course he won’t be able to stay away and leave the Master in UNIT’s clutches for long, even if it only bodes trouble. When he finds the way to reverse the Master’s transformation, he’ll get the version of his arch-friend he’s been least expecting.
As for the Master, he’ll have a hard time figuring out what the Doctor might want in return for his help. There must be something, right? There’s always a catch.

“Still… I'm sure y-you'd rather be stuck with any Time Lord other than me,” the Master replies.
There is the beginning of a smile forming on the Doctor's lips as he shakes his head, and a faint glimmer in his eyes that could be easily mistaken by the tears gathering there, but that in reality is caused by something else – or rather a collection of somethings; memories of a childhood shared and promises made.
“There's no one else I'd rather be with right now.”
The Doctor takes care of the Master after he gets gravely injured during one of their trips, and their relationship grows as they end up taking care of each other.
