She could comprehend the words, the name and the meaning. She understood that his name being on the roster meant he was the starting Beater for England’s national team, but for whatever reason, when her eyes ran over the black ink, her brain could not articulate any emotions or reaction.

“What, um,” she swallows and pushes her braid back over her shoulder with her other hand, “what are you doing?” Her voice wavers, and she hates that he might hear it. Hates that he might be able to read her mind—she’s never been good at hiding her emotions, they’re always painted plainly on her face.
“One, I need to hold onto something,” he explains, leaving no room for questions, “and two, I don’t want you to jump away from me while you help.”
“Help?” Emma slowly raises her eyes to meet his.
“Yes, help,” he says flatly, blue eyes boring into hers so intensely she’s sure he can tell what she’s thinking. “I can’t suture with one hand. I need you to be the other one.”
“I–I’m not sure I’m the best person for this,” she glances over her shoulder, looking to signal Donnie or someone who’s actually good at sutures. Her brain scrambles for an out, something to ground herself, to slow this down. “I’ve barely been here a month and—”
“And I’ve been doing this for twenty years, so you’ll be safe with me.”

The relentless pace, constant chaos, and sleepless nights were taking a toll on her psyche, and she longed for a reprieve. Desperate for a change, Emma enrolled in the perioperative training program, hoping the order and routine of the operating room would offer some refuge. After completing her training, she was assigned to orthopedics—not the role she had dreamed of, but a chance she could work with.
However, her newfound rhythm was disturbed when she had to work under the daunting Dr. Park: silent, sharp, and impossible to read.

“No, you’re not,” Azriel rumbled, stepping closer. His shadows curled tighter, restless and insistent. “I can smell it.”
Lucien turned sharply, his golden eye blazing. “I said I’m fine,” he snapped, the mask of calm cracking for the briefest moment.Or, Lucien really needs a hug and I wrote a self- indulgent fic about it.
