She glanced across the hold to see another woman who was huddled up miserably. Her baby had been hacking and coughing horribly, and the slave brokers had declared that he’d die eventually, so they might as well cull the little one so the illness didn’t spread. She shuddered and held Vidri to her breast, praying that her daughter didn’t have the same illness. She coughed into her elbow and added a prayer that she’d get over her own little cough soon. She didn’t look at her elbow; if she didn’t see the blood, it wasn’t real. Her blurred vision and aching head were just due to having to sleep upright in chains
