Summary
This is a first for Thanatos. He has drunk before, yes, but he has never drunk quite this much, and certainly never wine direct from Dionysus’ cup. He had had a lot of it, as overflowing and everlasting as it is, heady and potent enough to disarm a Hydra. Dionysus had offered, and Death was about to politely decline when Zagreus came out of nowhere, swinging an arm around him. He said right next to his ear, “For the record, this is what I meant by ‘live a little’,” before taking his own big gulp from the goblet, Dionysus laughing as it spilled down his chin. Thanatos remembers watching Zagreus wipe away the wine from the side of his mouth, smiling and licking his lips and when he pushed the cup towards Death, he put it to his mouth without a second thought. Thanatos drank, and the sound of Zagreus’ shocked laughter coaxed him further. So long as he heard Zag’s delighted shouts and befuddled cheers, he drank.

“Listen to me, you idiot,” Thanatos speaks in a hushed tone. “Lord Hades is a very powerful and intimidating man. He has ordered every shade, God, and beast in this House to make your life as hard as possible, or else. Those who care for you endlessly: Nyx, Achilles, Megaera, Dusa… myself. Would we risk everything we have if we did not think you capable? We know you are indescribably capable. You show that every time you step out of this House.” He stops, thinks, then swiftly adds, “That stupid bet was hope. Boredom, too, something new and exciting after aeons of repetitive work. You are new and exciting,” Zagreus’ mouth is open, astonished. “We all had numbers. No one said never. We all knew you were getting out, Zagreus.”
