Speaking Hindi has always straddled the line between normal, natural, and stilted for Charles.
His mother’s tongue has always sounded like music to his ears. A connection to a people, to a religion, that he has met so rarely over the years.
But his father always hated it in their house. Never considered it good enough. Instead of getting to go the mandir with his mother, on every Sunday that his father cared enough to take them to church, Kala Rowland would be in her dupatta, Charles the picture of perfect piety.
But god, piety never felt like poetry unless it was in the context of his mother’s religion, not his father’s.
When Charles moved out of his parents’ house, the first thing he made sure to build was a shrine. He put his housewarming gift from his mother- her statue of Ganesha, brought when her parents moved to London to start a new life so that things could be brighter for their children- in a position of high import in his flat, where everyone could see it, because he wasn't shoving anything back into the closet ever again.
