Summary
Essek had disappeared, and then the Mighty Nein had swept through Vurmas again. The half-orc had given the report that they had lost Essek in the ruins. They claimed Essek had cast a spell, that it had backfired, that they had tried to save him as he fell down a crevasse, until they could no longer hear him calling back to them. It was a believable death, to the ruins, to the chill of Eiselcross. A brilliant lie.
She wondered if Essek had come up with it himself.

“Can you tell me why you are so certain I would prefer your younger face?”
Caleb laughed again, still disbelieving. It seemed impossible that Essek could not understand this—Caleb felt like he was being asked to explain why burnt food tasted bad, or why putting one’s hand through a meat grinder would hurt. But Essek’s bemusement seemed entirely genuine. “Because it’s not as ugly? Because who likes fucking decrepit old men?”
“Clearly you have not heard what your students say about you when they think you cannot hear,” Essek said, with such dry frankness that it startled a laugh out of Caleb.
Caleb is getting old, and has a hard time believing that Essek can still be attracted to him. Essek decides to prove him wrong with a little tender loving bondage and body worship.

Summary
It starts like this: Essek, in a fit of lonely idiocy, agrees to partake in a honeypot scheme with the Mighty Nein. It goes about as smoothly as he should have expected.
It evolves to this: by decree of Deirta Thelyss, Verin is tasked with protecting his brother and his brother’s friends(??) as they parlay with the Children of Malice over the diplomatic incident they caused. Verin remembers his brother being much more of an aloof douche and much less of a floating disaster.
Or: In a reality where the Mighty Nein do a stop in Xhorhas prior to meeting up with DeRogna, Essek agrees to help with one side quest and ends up with a lover, a brother, and a fight with a god.
