or: Eddie receives an ominous invitation to Steve Harrington's Christmas party. Clearly there’s some ulterior motive, some nefarious reason why the former King would request The Freak’s presence. (Which is a completely reasonable conclusion to make, no matter what his bandmates say.) Now Eddie just has to find evidence of Harrington’s crimes and try not to die in the process.

Summary
Ok, so he's no Will Byers, but Steve thinks he can pretty definitively say at this point that he's got shit luck. Sure, he was born with a silver spoon and whatever, and he was loved by the smartest, strongest, bravest girl in the world (however briefly), and he's got a gaggle of preteens who look at him like he's Clark Kent and sometimes act like he's transformed into Superman, but still. Shit luck.
It happens on a Wednesday. His third day back at school since Billy kicked his shit in so badly that Chief Hopper was willing to leave his adopted super-child at the Byers' for three hours to drive him to the ER.

Summary
“What do you mean what happened?”
“I just…” Jonathan’s eyes flicked up past Steve at the sound of the backdoor creaking open. “Mom.”
Steve turned to see Mrs. Byers’ in the doorway with a glass of water and a bottle of something. Probably the painkillers she’d promised. She gave him a matching look of concern and confusion, although she was quicker to conceal it.
He started to feel hot and embarrassed with the reaction he was getting. It hadn’t been meant to slow anything down, let alone draw everyone’s eyes to his bare chest. He leaned down to grab his soaking wet shirt off the back steps, although it was really just an excuse to look down and away from everyone’s gazes.
Mrs. Byers’ put out a hand as if to tap him on the shoulder and then drew it back like she was worried about hurting him.
“Steve, honey, you can borrow one of Jonathan’s shirts."

Love the hc that Steve can cook, but not without causing himself pain at every turn. Very on-brand. Part 2 has Dustin conning Steve into hosting a Christmas party, part 3 has Steve babysitting El and features a confrontation with Billy that ends with a seizure. Not prominent enough to count for Mind Nonsense.

Steve washes his hair in the Byers' bathroom while they wait for the others to get back.

The bathroom is easy enough to find. It's smaller than he's used to, but it'll work. He debates keeping the light off. He doesn't want to know what he looks like yet. The skin around his eyes and nose feels hot and puffy. There's no way it can look any better than it feels. Holding his breath, Steve flips the switch. It's not any brighter than the lights in the rest of the house, but he still can't help but squint against it.

"Everybody's back," Dustin calls through the door. His voice is softer as he adds, "You're… still alive in there, right?"
"Yes." This kid, really.
"Are you sure?"
Shaking his head—the world doesn't spin this time, that's something—Steve opens the door. "You think I died in the two seconds since the last time you asked me?"
