    Hutch would later swear something physically cracked inside him at that point. He stood abruptly. "Yeah, well, no one wants you forever, Gordo."

    "Well, you sure are ducking and weaving there, partner," commented Hutch dryly as he tucked the comforter firmly around Starsky's shoulders, trying to trap in as much warm air as possible.

    "You want to lay or sit?" asked Hutch, smoothing back some wayward curls that had stuck to Starsky's still clammy forehead. "Huh?" He stayed where he was, waiting for an answer, trying to mask his worry as Starsky shot him a baleful look.

    "I ain't g-going to the hospital."

    "Lay, or sit?" repeated Hutch firmly.

    Holmes' receives word of his father's death, and asks Watson to accompany him. Watson knows very little of Holmes' childhood - only that he purposefully does not mention it. Beyond that, he can only surmise. Somewhat uncomfortable in the Holmeses' personal matters, he explores the Holmes estate... and finds a long-dead corpse, rotting away in the servants' quarters.

    Against Mycroft's wishes, Holmes and Watson embark on a murder investigation in Holmes' childhood village of Adderbury. Holmes' facade is indomitable... to all, perhaps, but his closest friend. As the dark nature of the Holmes patriarch's last years grow apparent, Watson grows ever more concerned that Holmes will simply shatter.

    His plans. Hutch gulped down three aspirin with the last of the coffee and tossed the empty cup and the trivia book in the back. What fucking plans? The only one with any plans in this unholy mess was sitting in a police lock-up dreaming dreams awake. And Hutch had already been there, done that, and come up empty. He scrubbed his left hand over his face and willed himself to focus. Back to the warehouse? To Huggy? To the precinct? Or to a madman to have his hope flayed open again?

    As he stepped forward Hutch had his first clear look of what looked like a cut and the beginnings of a nasty bruise just below Starsky's left eye.

    Covering the remaining distance in a couple of strides, Hutch got to the door just as the entire Starsky-built edifice was about to crumble. Reaching around his partner's left side, he instantly hauled most of the weight off Nick and clamped his left hand onto Starsky's, wrapping it across his neck and shoulders.
