Summary
A fuck-up at work triggers bad memories and bad habits for John Carter. In the midst of a record heat wave, Carter goes for a punishing run on his family's property, with terrible consequences. Peter Benton to the rescue.
He puts his fingers to Carter’s neck, and is horribly unsurprised at the weak, thready, and extremely rapid pulse he feels beneath the skin. Tachycardic. Very tachycardic.
A hand on John’s forehead is all but confirmation of Peter’s fears. His face is blazing hot, more like touching a furnace than human skin.
Heat stroke.

PLEASE READ THE TAGS.
Peter gets the call on a Thursday in late July, mid-shift. He’s on the next flight out of Chicago.
“Is this Doctor Peter Benton?”
“Speaking.”
“Hello, Doctor Benton. I’m calling from the Frederickson Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta. I have you listed as the emergency contact for John Carter?”
“What’s happened.”
“I’m afraid that a few hours ago, Doctor Carter was admitted to the hospital with some very serious injuries.”
“What kind of injuries, exactly?”
“Doctor Benton, he was bleeding significantly from his left arm and wrist. It appears… Well, it appears he made an attempt on his own life.”
Everything after that is a blur.

First time it happens, he only wakes up in the kitchen.
He’s standing, though, which is what unsettles him. John Carter’s been a chronic insomniac since childhood; sleeplessness was an old and familiar curse. But to come to, standing alone in his kitchen in the middle of the night, the moon so bright outside it was like someone left the porch light on.

Medwhump May Day 31- "Stay with me"
There is no movement, no sound except the constant lament of the bent old woman he shoved away to reach his patient. It's a sound he's heard often after bad news has been delivered.
Too early for that, Benton thinks in a panic, snapping at her to be quiet and pressing his ear to Carter's chest. You're okay, aren't you? Of course you are. You're alright, man. You're alright.
He closes his eyes. Listens. Hopes.
Carter isn't breathing.
