Summary
There are places in London where a man of my nature might find temporary companionship or a short physical liaison. I was well acquainted with them even before I left for my Afghan service, and after my return, I reacquainted myself with them. But after I took up lodgings with Sherlock Holmes, I lessened the frequency of my visits until I had all but ceased to go entirely.
It was not solely my fear of discovery that kept me away, though that concern was most certainly a factor. Holmes was, after all, a man of exceptional perceptive ability, and I would not like for him to know what kind of establishments I was frequenting. Rather, it was my growing feelings for him that kept me from seeking out any other man’s company.

Summary
John Watson is ultimately a creature of instinct, of acting first and thinking later. Several times while out with me he has noticed someone following us not from the logical signs of their movement but from an uneasy sort of feeling, a prickle on the back of his neck.
This is why it is so extraordinary that, in our early days, he never seemed to notice the way I watched him.
