“Allllllright, Rocky! I think I found one you’ll like. G-guh-guessss what?”
“Chicken butt,” Rocky replies hesitantly, with more than a tinge of exasperation in his tone. Hah! Just as I’ve trained him! I cackle, and almost forget what I was planning to say.
“I f–f-found a movie for us to watch!” The ‘F’ sound has my teeth grinding uncomfortably against my lips. I wrestle with it for a second, and then force myself through it. I take a quick pause between my sentences in an attempt to calm myself and my stutter, but I know it’s not going to do anything. “It’s about a little girl, and an alien. We humans have a lot of different ideas and depictions of what aliens are like. Th–th–this one’s unique, but it’s still nothing like you. To be honest, I can’t say I’ve seen anyone guess that the first aliens would be… giant rock spiders.”
“Rocky scary space monster,” he sings, proud.
“Y-yes, yes. Grace leaky space monster,” I recite. That’s our little duo, ain’t it?

Ryland gripped the wall. “What do—what do we do? What are we supposed to be doing?” His voice didn’t quite teeter into panic, but it was a very near ‘almost’. His voice cracked slightly in the middle.
“Not much,” Ilyukhina told him, smiling, but her eyes were sweeping him up and down. “Nothing to do. Hold onto something and get ready for a ride.”
“I don’t think I got training,” Ryland warbled, realizing.

Three, four, five, and then some.
He lives this way for a long while. An embarrassingly long while. It’s reaching towards December now, and where others are digging through their attic for Christmas decorations, Spencer is sitting on a cardboard box because he hasn’t reassembled his dining set. If he had Christmas decorations, there is no way he’d be digging them out right now.
He shuts his eyes and pretends it’s not there.
Spencer moves. Hotch and Emily help make things liveable.
