And for some reason it’s this—the weight of Sokka’s key, cold in his palm—that has Zuko’s eyes blurring with tears, the emotion in his chest almost too heavy to bear.
Zuko wishes he could say something—how much he’ll miss him, how much he hopes he has an amazing time even though it’s killing him that he’s leaving—but the words all get caught in his throat, and he fears if he opens his mouth something like a sob might come out. So he just hugs Sokka back, as tightly as he can, and hopes that’s enough to communicate how he feels.

Zuko and Sokka are roommates and best friends. It isn't until Sokka decides to study abroad for a summer that Zuko realizes how much he means to him.

Summary
Sokka is bitter and broken after Ba Sing Se, but Katara and Aang are worse. Their only choice is to regroup and plan, and even that is a hard and terrifying prospect as the Avatar's unconsciousness lingers. Sokka's grateful to have his father to lean upon, and during those times they're separated, he leans into ruthlessness.
Zuko is hearing and doing all the right things, one after another. His exile finally ends. His path is laid before him perfect and predictable. He should feel like a man walking upon a plush, flat carpet. Instead, his footing feels as treacherous as wet shale as he runs from choices he regrets, and toward choices he realizes he fears even more.

Sokka freezes, midway up from his seat. “Wait. I’m covering for Mai and Ty Lee?”
Piandao’s voice breaks his focus from his memories. “Is that a problem?”
“No, no, that’s not a problem,” Sokka replies, absent-mindedly. “But hey, Piandao, do you… do you know who my partner for this season will be?”
Piandao frowns. “Zuko Sugita. He’s their usual partner. I thought you knew this?”

After a last-minute work reassignment requires Sokka to spend his summer in a cramped van with Zuko, he finds himself questioning whether or not he can survive it. He unexpectedly finds a tedious friendship in the other man, and as they navigate storm patterns together, Sokka becomes increasingly aware of the tender storm of emotions in his heart. “And then it comes back,” Hob says. An unpleasant feeling gnaws at his gut, not unlike the sensation of hunger itself. “But yes, it comes and goes.”
His friend nods. “I have found that after…some time, it is no longer a unique sensation.”
“What does that mean?”
“Do you feel your skin, Hob Gadling? Your bones?”
“No,” he says.
“Hunger, too, can be a part of you,” he says.
