There are no bones, at least not here, as he makes his slow way down what must have once been an avenue of some grandeur. He's not sure why he thought there would be. Five hundred years have elapsed since the cataclysm here. Maybe animals had carried them off. Maybe they were swallowed up by the drifting sands. Maybe Gluttony had eaten them. Maybe someone had buried them.
Maybe Hohenheim had buried them.

The Deceiver’s heart is pounding, blood rattling through his exposed neck as their talons prick at his arteries. His eyes are blown wide, dark and angry, teeth skinned back from his lips. He is feeling so much— fury, offense, surprise, and beneath it all, best of all, the cold, delicious current of fear.

The fading sunlight from the tiny barred window set high in the wall catches on his face, in his eyes, and Zoro is suddenly sure that they are not and have never been black. They’re a dark, dark, dark red, and there’s a light behind them that sets his teeth on edge.
Zoro is suddenly sitting up straight, hands itching for a hilt.
“I don’t make deals with devils,” he says.
History is out of joint, the seas have risen, and the World Government is at endless war against devils from humanity's darkest imaginings.

By the time she knew enough characters to pretend to dip into her father’s minute collection of books, she could ask her mother why her own feet pounded the ground broad as a horse’s.
Her adopted mother threw her a dagger-sharp glance. “Men need strong feet.” Without pausing in her embroidery, little scarlet figures crossing a saffron expanse in the colours of the Yao Clan, she stared at Lan Fan coldly enough that the girl bowed her head, cheeks burning in shame. “You begin training with your father’s father come the New Year.”
