Summary
“He didn’t like ants as much as I do, did he?”
Yoshiki’s voice startles Hikaru, his eyes snapping open. Hikaru stares forward, at Yoshiki’s back, letting the words sink in as he considers him. His shoulders are drawn tight together, pinched, his shirt perfectly tucked in and back ramrod-straight — that’s familiar. So is the mole just behind the shell of his ear. But his hair is longer now; it’s brushing down against his nape in a way Yoshiki rarely let happen before. It’s a wonder Satoko hasn’t forced him to sit down for a haircut yet.
That’s not what Hikaru should be thinking about, though.
“…nah. He liked ‘em fine — he used to watch videos ‘bout them all the time — but he preferred spiders if ya asked him. Why’dya ask?”
“Dunno. Kaoru said somethin’ the other day.” Hikaru can’t see Yoshiki’s face but he can imagine it. His downturned eyes and little droopy mouth. “Said she doesn’t get why I’m suddenly so obsessed with ‘em.”
Or; Hikaru learns about the nature of ants, and contemplates the difference between Yoshiki and Yoshiki.

Summary
“Yoshiki,” Kouhei says quietly. “Do you know why nobody’s allowed up Nisayama?”
Yoshiki blinks. Kouhei’s voice has shifted, into something deeper, hushed, steady despite the urgency lacing his tone. There’s a seriousness to him that Yoshiki doesn’t think he’s ever seen before.
“…’cause it's dangerous?” Yoshiki guesses. “It’s easy to get lost up there. An’ there’s bears too.”
Kouhei huffs, a small, amused smile tugging at his lips. “I don’t think a bear’s been spotted ‘round here for twenty years,” he muses. “Nah. It’s ‘cause there’s a spirit living on the mountain.”
It’s Yoshiki’s turn to stare at Kouhei. “A spirit?”
Or, in a different world with slightly different choices, Yoshiki chases Hikaru up the mountain, and suffers as a result.

Summary
Hikaru doesn’t get it. He doesn’t get any of it.
Some days, it feels like Yoshiki just wants as much distance between himself and Hikaru as he can get. Other days, it’s like being away from Hikaru would kill him. Hikaru can’t tell what’s gonna set Yoshiki off or not, and it’s not like looking at the memories would help. He got moody like this before, but only when Hikaru tried to talk about girls or Yoshiki leaving one day, and never for as long as he does now.
Is he doing something wrong?
“Hey, Yoshiki?” he calls ahead. “What d’ya reckon we should do for my birthday?”
Or; ‘Hikaru’ celebrates his sixteenth birthday. Hikaru doesn’t.

Summary
“Indou-san,” Hara-sensei greets as Hikaru stands in front of him. “How are you holding up?”
It’s a question he has always hated, right back since fifth grade, when his daddy died. It’s a question that forces him to look at himself, at what he’s feeling, and decide what other people want to see and what’s too ugly to reveal. It’s exhausting. Can’t Hara-sensei tell just by looking at him? Can’t he tell Hikaru doesn’t want to wake up most mornings? Can’t he tell that it’s wrong, that Hikaru shouldn’t be the one standing here? Or is Hikaru really that good at tricking others into not looking that closely at him?
It’s what he’s done his entire life, after all. Only one person even tried.
After the death of his best friend, Hikaru tries to fill the space he left.

Summary
“If you don’t wanna talk about whatever it is that’s upsetting ya, that’s fine.” Hikaru leans back against the wall, not looking at her as he picks at his shoelaces. “But if someone rejected ya, just say the word an’ I’ll thrash ‘em.”
This time, Asako laughs properly.
“I beat you every time we arm wrestle,” she reminds him, but then she stops smiling. It’s easier if she doesn’t look at him. “My uh… my granny died, actually. Last week.”
When she risks a glance at him, Hikaru is looking at her, his face caught in a soft, sad look she doesn’t want to understand. “Yeah,” he says quietly. He catches her hand, and squeezes it, slightly cold but firm and solid. “I’m sorry. That really, really sucks.”
Or, upset over losing her granny, Asako finds comfort in an unlikely source.

Summary
“One of these days,” Satoko says, when Kaoru and Yoshiki are meant to be sleeping, “you’ll have to look out for yourself. Don’t you think?”
“What does that mean?” Toshinori asks, as steady as he can manage.
“All I’m saying is, sooner or later, you best know how to look after yourself.” There’s steel to her tone, quietly firm and steady. Normally, she’s quick to volume; this is something she doesn’t want the kids to hear. “God knows you’ll need it when Kaoru moves out.”
After Satoko makes it clear where they stand, Toshinori goes to speak to his best friend about it all.

“You know,” Trucy says, kicking her heels up onto the dashboard in the way she knows Apollo hates, “this is kind of a weekend dad thing to do. Taking me to the aquarium. Are we gonna go to the zoo next? Or the science museum? Ooo, camping, are we gonna go camping?”
“You keep that talk up and you won’t get anything from the gift shop,” Apollo replies, which on the one hand is a very weekend dad thing to say in Trucy’s opinion, but on the other she does really want to spend his money on a plushie sea otter, so she sets about to messing with the radio instead.
Or, Apollo takes Trucy to the aquarium, and they very decidedly do not talk about their mother.

Summary
If someone were to ask Jason later – if he were to ask himself later – he would say that he turned because he wanted to show that he wasn’t afraid of the man who killed him. To show him that he could look him in the eyes and remain calm. In truth, he didn’t know why he turned. Perhaps it was because he just wanted to aim his gun at the clown. Perhaps it was because he just couldn’t look at Batman any longer. Later, he would admit, he would wish he had never turned at all.
“Well, if it isn’t my Holy Saviour Batman.”
Jason Todd had grand plans for his homecoming to Gotham. Plans that involved a crowbar (ironic), a clown (dead) and his adoptive-father (ruined). Yet years have passed since he was last in Gotham; it is not as familiar to him as it once was. Time has marched on without him, and the nature of his killer - for better, for worse, for much much much - has changed.

“Have you contacted the Young Guardian Force?” Nick asked, because Charlie did that sometimes. Returned to teamwork when solo was too much. “He might have visited Tara and Darcy -”
“We asked,” Michael said. “And - and they’re searching, but they say they haven’t seen him. And we even checked the Crow’s Nest surveillance footage. There’s been no sign of him.”Nick sucked in a breath. Not with the team. Not at the Roost. Not near the Crow’s Nest. This was -

Soon, Sootstream had done all he could. All that was left was to wait for the end.
He could not bear to see the end.
But he must, he reasoned with himself. He was a medicine cat, and with such a title came duties that must be seen to and done with. Even if such duties felt like burdens. Even if such duties were watching his leader - his best friend, closer than kin - die.
A leader has nine lives. Minnowstar has reached the end of hers, and Sootstream refuses to let her die alone.

Summary
Eponine lived half her life at Cosette’s house when she was eighteen.
Well. Not quite half. And not her life either, because her life wasn’t like Cosette’s life, with her floral print dresses and light, dizzying perfume, and her bedroom clean and neat, and a father who she saw everyday, who’d kiss her on the forehead, and give her twenty, thirty, fifty quid ‘in case anything bad happens’ and say ‘be safe, my dear’.
“I do wonder where you go sometimes,” Cosette said, smiling at Eponine’s reflection. “You get so lost in your head.”
Eponine blinked, and scowled at her bleach-blonde friend. She didn’t get too many moments like that.
“Only when I’m around you,” she said, and Cosette laughed, all bubbly and delighted.

Well. Connor lives too. He isn’t quite sure how or why, but he lives, like people often do, and sometimes he wonders if this was a mistake, all a mistake, but then Evan will look at him just so, and the world feels - the world feels okay again. Just for that moment.

Connor was alone in the park, and then Evan was by his side.
Perfect.
“Hey,” he said softly. His hand found Connor’s, and he held it.
Just how things are meant to be.
And then he saw it. All the beautiful and gorgeous inhumanity that coated Evan as though nothing else belonged to him.
Feel Happy.
“I have to go,” he blurted out.
And he ran.
Feel Good Yet?

Summary
The city was quiet in a way it often was not. Night hung in the air like a comforting blanket, a light breeze caressing anyone it came across, dancing around apartment buildings like nothing mattered. From a distance, one would call the city lights pretty.
The city was silent, save for two balconies downtown, where two friends stood opposite each other, high above everyone else, higher than even the street lamps below.
In truth, he preferred Connor like this, isolated on the balcony, alone and no one but Evan’s. It was safer here, with only the two of them. Much safer.

“Do you have any siblings?” her roommate asked part way through the movie, pouring Zoe another glass. She didn’t notice the way Zoe’s breath hitched and the way she froze.
Did she still have a brother?
Zoe Murphy had gone from the youngest to the only child in less than a night. As easily as that, Connor slipped away from them all like grains of sands between their fingers. But he was still ‘her brother’. Always ‘her brother’.
Right?
It's over two years since Connor's death. Zoe's moving on and away from home.
Things are still strange without him.

It was only when Mrs Murphy came up to the door, smiling and pulling the girl close to her that Evan realised that no, he didn’t have the wrong house, and that this was Connor’s little sister.
Connor Murphy’s little sister.
Connor Murphy’s eight year old little sister called Zoe, who took one look at Evan and broke down into tears and glares, then clung to her mom’s side, even once they were all sat down at the Murphy’s dining room table.

Summary
It started with Connor Murphy, Evan’s soulmate, swallowing a handful of pills in the park, and dying.
The Murphy family is very understanding, for the situation, Jared supposes. They don’t quite seem to realise that Connor and Evan were strangers at best, but they say that Evan is very welcome to visit them at any time. For dinner, of course.
Still. In a culture as saturated with soulmates as theirs, it’s still a shock when yours dies before you know them. They keep Evan in hospital, under observation, because they know people can die of that broken heart syndrome in situations like these. When one soulmate goes, so does the other.

The thing was -
No one would miss Connor. No matter how many statistics there were in the world, no one would miss him. How could they?
Because that was who he was, as a person. Not unmissable, but the opposite. He was someone who people were glad to see gone, because he was inherently bad, and atrocious, and fucked up, because he was like a black hole, or a grenade, or something equally as likely to destroy itself and scar everyone who was stupid enough to stand close to him.
Like Evan.

Summary
Evan Hansen dies on a cold August day, surrounded by trees taller than he ever could imagine, and he dies of a broken neck and a broken mind.
Connor Murphy dies just after midnight, having overdosed on pills. It’s painless, at least. Pitiful, maybe.
Two boys commit suicide, only one of which is recognised as such. They die two weeks apart, and the suicide that is called a suicide occurs on the day that the unheralded suicide is announced.
Two boys are dead. The world is not.
There’s a story in that.
