Summary
"We were so worried, we heard you—" Ragatha starts, and then looks up. She meets Jax's gaze dead-on, and goes silent. Tears brim in the corner of her eye. Her hand flies up to cover her mouth. He can't tell if the look on her face is relief or fear.
Gangle's staring at him like she's seen a ghost. Pomni slowly raises to her feet, brows furrowed. She winces as every movement jars her wavering form.
Cowered on the floor, panting, confused and disoriented, with everyone standing above him, taller than him… it reminds Jax of something deeply unpleasant. They're all staring at him. They're all seeing him.
Jax knows they're not going to like what they see.
His breath quickens until his head is spinning, and he feels like he's going to vomit. He forces himself upwards with a frustrated cry, swaying in place, and then turns and bolts towards his room as fast as he can.
"NO!" Pomni screams.
(or: pomni pulls jax back from the brink.)

Summary
After Pomni tells the rest of the cast that Jax hasn't been doing well since the last adventure, they try to make him feel more included, much to his annoyance. So, why not show them that he's perfectly fine by giving them all a little scare with a new prank he's been cooking up?
Sure, they may be accusing him of going too far and they're all acting like he doesn't exist, but who cares!? At least they stopped pestering him.
So why is he suddenly feeling even more lonely than before?
And why is Gangle of all people the only one who will even still look at him? -

Summary
Her mouth is full of something. She swallows, unthinking, but it gradually fills up again. It takes her a few tries to realize it is blood. Her right eye is gushing blood.
Her mom is on the floor in the kitchen. Ragatha stares at her. Her mom’s face is scalded, brilliant red, and portions of it are already bubbling up with blisters. The jamming pot is dented on the floor, the glass jars smashed across the kitchen tile. The gas stove burns merrily away. A shard the length of Ragatha’s pinky finger protrudes from her mom’s throat. She is unmoving. She looks a little like a mannequin.
My mom is dead, Ragatha thinks, vaguely. It is not particularly believable. My mom is waiting, she thinks, and that seems more fitting.
Ragatha loses an eye. She has a couple of bigger problems.

In 2008, a group of real estate agents examine an C&A building. Naturally, when one of the agents falls unconscious and doesn't recover, she's placed on life support.
Nine years later, the Circus is destroying itself without Caine and Kinger thinks he might be able to give them a way out. But Ragatha's not so sure her friends know what they're getting into by agreeing to be her mother's daughter.
