Summary
Castiel spreads his arms, and counts his breaths. He sighs into the air and likes the way it sounds. So he does it again, and again, and again, catches the rhythm of the song with the air in his mouth.
He is thinking about lunch — the sparseness of his fridge, how much it will cost to buy the cupcakes he likes from the grocery store, how long it will take to walk there and back. The time it will take to cook pasta. The weight of the jar of sauce in his hands. How he'd have to peel himself off the floor if he wants to eat anything at all.
Time is a funny thing. Castiel has lost track of it in the past week. Days slip by, like water, waves rolling over his body, smoothing out the rough edges of him, turning him numb until he can't really feel anymore.
Or;
Castiel, grieving, and his best bud Dean Winchester, caring for him. Also, it gets unhinged after a point but we'll see about that when we get there!

Summary
He has little to do this morning — he has little to do most mornings, these days — and so the indulgences. The eggs, and the peaches, and the newspapers he doesn't read. He presses his palm flat against his stomach. Too many indulgences, if he is to be honest. Still, he does not quite have the mind to stop. The world has taken its fair share from him, and then some. He does not have the strength to fight the want in him anymore, what little of it there is left.
From somewhere beyond the kitchen, a song. It is soft, and jazzy, and unlike the music that Dean used to think of as his. He thinks of this music as his, now. Things are different from how they used to be. It is all so very sad. Or so very good, depending.
Or;
Dean has a home. Dean has been waiting. And grief comes knocking.

Summary
"Dean!" the man calls, and Castiel feels a sense of unreality wash over him at the deep tenor of his voice, both strange and familiar, all at once. "The popcorn's ready!"
"Be right there, sweetheart," Dean calls back, and Castiel feels something twist in his gut. He isn't sure why he feels that way.
It's still him. It's still Cas. A Cas.
Heaven was once only memory, and memories are sometimes wishes. Dean says he thinks he just wished really, really hard.

Castiel finally goes to see Dean in heaven, to tell him that everything is different now, and then finds something there that surprises him. Now they have to talk about it. Kind of.

Dean's done some pretty stupid things, but getting drunk-hitched in Vegas to a colleague he barely knows might just take the cake. His surprise husband, Castiel, is a little weird but likable despite that, and Dean figures they’ll go back to Boston, get a quiet annulment, and go their separate ways. Six weeks later, he’s still married to one of the strangest, most genuine and definitely most dangerously lov-- likable guys he's ever known. Dean doesn't know why or really even how it’s happening, but it’s getting harder and harder to remember that he has divorce papers to file.

That’s how it starts.
Or maybe it started a couple of months ago, when a Novak stray wandered into camp with a head full of strange ideas. But Alpha John Winchester saw potential there, a glimmer of something like hope… he let the omega stay. If that hadn’t happened, the couch wouldn’t have said “Hey!”
Though of course none of this would have happened if a bunch of loons hadn’t released the genoforming virus upon mankind a century ago, turning the survivors into this strange new species with an aberrant biology-...

Summary
So, it turns out that saving the king’s life during a battle is a move straight out of a classic ballad. No, seriously. Fairytales, legends and romances too, it's grist for all their mills. This makes no sense to Castiel, but as a fallen angel who’s only been human for a few days, everything about these mortals and their 'romance' is perplexing.
Fortunately king Dean does not know it was Castiel who saved his life, and the latter intends to keep it that way. The idea of a one-sided bond of gratitude between them is… unappealing. He prefers his sacrifice to remain unrequited. Dean’s still searching for his savior, and hell, the whole kingdom believes this person is his predestined love interest, but that’s not an issue. It’s not like someone else is going to pop out of the woodwork to claim responsibility for Castiel’s good deed.
