Summary
he's put in place three rules for himself since returning to the emergency department: be transparent when handling drugs, spend as much time with mel as possible, and stay out of trinity santos' business.
he doesn't mean to break rule three. he really doesn't.
(or, mel and santos try to be friends. it doesn't go as well as they had hoped.)

Summary
There by the kitchen window was Frank, a silhouette against the early morning sun. His hair was fluffy, and he looked biteable in boxer shorts and one of Robby's t-shirts. Robby's breath hitched as he noticed how loosely it fitted around that narrow waist. He loved pressing his hands into the divots above those prominent hipbones, into the well-defined abdominal muscles. How his large hands could press and squeeze and hold him there.
Or, our boys share a slow morning and breakfast.

Summary
Actually, Mel's excited about a lot of things going into the new school year. She’s excited to co-teach with Dr. Mohan and Mr. Langdon. She’s excited to continue supporting the kids on her caseload from the previous year, and she knows writing their IEPs will go so much better now that she knows them and their families a little. She’s excited that her Physics class will be entirely made up of students she taught in Chemistry the previous year; they were a great group.
There are things to worry about, too. Co-teaching with two new people again. The daily possibility that she’s going to do something overwhelmingly embarrassing in front of Langdon. Still not knowing where she should go during her prep periods. That she’s going to be just as alone as she’s always been at work, but with some added disappointment because she’s let her hopes get up, just a little.
There’s no way that she and Langdon can co-teach as well as she hopes. She’s sure her bubble will burst soon enough, that her crush will fade, and everything will settle back to baseline.
(It doesn't.)

Robby hears it, if only distantly.
It’s only when he looks over the top of his computer, watching in real time as Dana pales and Samira’s face twists itself into something that can only be described as nauseated, that it clicks into place for him.
or: Langdon gets brought in to PTMC. They find out that the love remains, after all.

Summary
These feelings were new, equally terrifying and intoxicating. This must be what others felt when they encountered their favorite celebrity. Perhaps due to her own thoughts over the last year, Langdon had become a pseudo-celebrity in his own way. To her, at least.
What surprised her was that warm, stinging feeling that she had grown so used to avoiding. Years of overachieving in order to prove herself to everyone she met had allowed her to outrun it. Mel was envious. And maybe a little obsessed. She couldn’t understand exactly why, the whiplash of the last ten minutes still taking a toll on her psyche.
She already had a thousand new feelings to unpack tonight when she got home, what difference does two more make?

Summary
The color goes out a little around the edges of Robby’s vision. He blindly thanks whatever formless nothing holding them all like dice, which Jack calls God and Robby refuses to pin down and name out of fear that it’s all just his mother, that he didn’t hit his head.
The ground is wet. It smells like farther south sometimes, this part of town after it rains. Maybe that’s why he goes so far from home when he’s not bound to a hospital and a clock.
“Shut the hell up and get in your car.”
“Yessir.” He’s so obvious it stings.
Robby hangs up and fumbles through enough savviness to send a string of coordinates, and receive a thumbs-up from Langdon. The last message either of them sent was a blurb from Langdon well past midnight from six days ago, left on read: do u actually think im any good at this shit or is every1 just rly good at lying to me

Summary
Robby stacks the last of the gauzes in the box. He’s about to stand up when a strong force pushes him back down in the chair. He looks to see Langdon’s shin pressing into his lap.
His hands freeze in the air like he’s just been caught at the scene of his crime.
What would his crime even be? Leaning back and watching Langdon reach for the box on the highest shelf instead of offering to help?
Or would it be for allowing Langdon to act inappropriately with his attending at work? Maybe for ogling Langdon’s body as he stretches up, the hem of his scrubs revealing the thin line of toned skin.

Summary
The first bets were placed shortly after the wedding ring disappeared from Langdon’s finger one rainy day in August, never to be seen again. Trinity thinks it’s funny, though she isn’t the most invested, until it all ends up coming to a head in a way more awful than any of them could have predicted.

Summary
Statistically, it's not all that uncommon. About 8% of all males in the country have some form of colorblindess, and Tanner Langdon just happens to fall into that 8%.
But unfortunately for Mel, she just 100% figured it out before his parents.

Summary
He must have gotten up too fast because his head spins in that light way it does when blood pressure doesn’t keep up. The adrenaline hasn’t settled out yet because his hands are still shaking, in fact all of him is still shaking. Why hasn’t he caught his breath yet? He presses a hand against the pinch in his chest like that might help. And why does it feel like there’s a rod jammed low in his sternum–
“Oh, fuck,” she says, her gaze sweeping him up and down.
He glances down to see what’s upset her – maybe she’s just offended that his cologne rubbed off on her or afraid he’ll blame her for the minor road rash that stings all the way up his left arm–
“Oh –” the knot in his chest is actually a hole and it’s bleeding over his hand “– fuck.”

“Think you’ll find god in the ambulance bay?”
Trinity’s heavy boots thunk thunk against the pavement, pause, and settle a few feet from him. She stands with her hands in her pockets like if she doesn’t hide them they’ll shake.
Frank shrugs. “If he’d be anywhere,” he comments noncommittally. I think I’d have seen him by now.

Summary
The sound of a wooden spoon hitting metal rings out. He flinches. “Why, Frank? Why couldn’t you have asked for help? You didn’t the first time, and I thought you learned your lesson.”
He nearly laughs. Something escapes his mouth that sounds more like a frustrated whine than he’d care to admit. “No, I learned that you handle my mistakes by kicking me out to deal with them, and my job is the only thing I have.” He tugs on his hair just to get his hands off the counter. “I barely have that anymore.”
Though he can’t seem to comment on anything else, Robby is firm to say, “This isn’t your mistake.”

Summary
There are three bets circulating the ER that month. One: how many weeks before Abbot realizes his leftover Stroganoff is actively growing mold. Two: the likelihood of Santos stabbing Garcia in the foot again after the recent announcement of her new relationship. And three: how long until Melissa King sees that Frank Langdon is no longer wearing his wedding ring.
That area of the board is tapered with dozens of sticky notes and wads of cash so big Ahmad had to buy another whiteboard.

“I don’t know.” Mel frowned. “Sometimes it feels like there’s a Frank and there’s a Langdon and they are somehow two different people. I know it doesn’t make much sense.” She sighed.
“Just talk to him. I'm sure he'll enjoy being a bit more…smug…if you ask him to.” Samira said, sincerely.
“She's right.” Trinity shrugged. “You're basically Willy Wonka giving him the golden ticket.” She added.

“I love used books,” she proffers, eager to be a normal person. “I love when books have a story.”
“Well, I’d say if a book doesn’t have a story, it’s a pretty sad excuse for a book.”
Mel can’t help herself—she snorts. “I didn’t realize you owned the shop,” Mel says quickly, embarrassed. “That must be nice—”
“Yeah, it is,” Frank answers distractedly. “I’m sorry, I’m pretty sure I just saw two time Emmy award winning actress Mel King snort at a joke I made.”
So he really did know her, then, wow.
“Well I’m not sure anyone will believe you,” she jokes lightly.
“Yeah,” Frank breathes, his eyes roving over her face in a stunned sort of awe. “I don’t think anyone will.”

Summary
Frank Langdon had been sober for three hundred and sixty-three days, divorced for two hundred and twelve, and in love with Mel King for so long now that he couldn’t remember what his brain sounded like before her.
The sobriety milestones were easier to quantify.
Love, unfortunately, was less cooperative.
