“You, uh, cut your hair.” Is the first thing El says, wonder in her voice as she picks at a strand of his now much more even haircut. “You never said you cut it!”
Mike feels Will’s eyes burning into him when he smiles at her, trying his best to look sheepish, “It was on a whim, didn’t think it was important.”
There's a lot he hadn't told them and a lot he hopes they never find out.
Mike Wheeler believes he can change, or at least he hopes he can, because otherwise there's no way he'll ever be able to fix himself before his girlfriend and his best friend come back and figure out what a freak he's become. But maybe change isn't up to him because everything he does seems to make matters worse, including the way he just can't seem to stop thinking about his best friend.

They were finally free. The sky had returned to its natural blue, the ground closed up, and the fog of black smoke no longer hung over Hawkins. Mike had to keep reminding himself of that fact. Everything was perfect.
Maybe too perfect.
OR
Post season 5 fix-it, where everyone was Vecna'ed and the world did "end," and now they have to figure out how to get back home. But the way to get home might suck more than if they were to stay in the messed up, distorted version of Hawkins. At least for Mike.

Summary
He was cursed. Mike Wheeler decided this on his first day of college, he'd decided similar things over the years, to try and at least try and understand why. He'd figured it out this time, after recognizing him by his stutter and his god forsaken smile, everything he'd built was about to come crashing down burning just like the upside down had.
"I"m doomed." He said slowly, almost like he was trying to avoid the terrible, terrible wave that was about to hit him like a sledgehammer.
It just had to be here, in somewhere that was supposed to be normal was turning into something he could only hope wasn't a repeat of Hawkins, or even Derry for that matter, he wasn't sure which was worse. But, again, with this amazing luck he'd been blessed with, he understood that he wouldn't have to decide which was worse, because both of his two worlds from hell were about to collide in the worst way he could possibly think of and there was nothing he could effectively do to stop it.

There's a reason mike has never been target.
As the truck enters through the gate, and the door closes, he can't help but feel a sense of anxiety. This is- or... is supposed to be his first time ever venturing into the upside down. Now that he's here, he can't help but remember. Remember that he's keeping a secret from everyone. A secret that he hopes isn't still out there, watching, waiting. For him.
OR: Mike Wheeler has been stuck in the upside down for the past 4-5 years(?). Honestly he can't remember anymore. The real mike, that is. The fake or clone, as he liked to call him, has been living his life for him since after the possession of his best friend back in '84. Mike has spent so long just trying to find his way out of this hellhole. Now newly adorned with a patchwork of scars over his body. He's taller, lankier, just gaunter. His hair's grown out, all ragged and shaggy from the rip and tug at it over the years, same goes for his clothes. He's done his best to snag what he could find since he's grown so much. Jonathan glances away from the road briefly to look at him. “They think he did it on purpose.”
His body knows before his mind does. The world turns on its axis. He feels like he’s going to be sick. He blinks rapidly, reaching out to grab the dashboard with one hand as he’s overcome with suffocating vertigo.
“Did what on purpose?”
“Jumped,” Jonathan says, careful and quiet. “The doctors think he jumped.”

Was…was Mike’s heart reacting to Will?
Mike isn’t looking at him. He’s staring hard at his cards as if he hasn’t seen them before, biting his inner cheek, and accentuating his dimple. As Will looks closer, he notices the pink shade spreading over the shell of Mike’s ear, the red emerging from the black curls like a rose sprouting from the earth.
Was Mike still nervous around him? Hadn’t they resolved that?
Will decides to test it. He leans onto the bed and rests a hand on Mike’s uninjured thigh, his thumb swiping side to side over the covers, and waits.
Mike's leg twitches into his hand, and barely a moment passes before the beeps speed up again, a rapid climb from steady to sprinting, and when Will looks, the blush has spread to Mike’s cheeks, his eyes unmoving and glued to his cards.
Oh. Will gapes at the monitor, the green spiking line. That's not discomfort.
Oh. He can have some fun with this.
Or: Mike, while protecting Will, gets attacked by a demogorgon. Guilt-ridden, Will stays with him in the hospital, forcing them to resolve the awkward air that has surrounded them for months, and, along the way, uncover some truths.
