"David could have been lying there for hours or days or years when he heard someone go 'What?'
A reaction people had had to David before. Usually it took at least him opening his mouth. 'New record,' he said aloud, not uncovering his eyes. 'Congratulations, Mr. Fry, you’ve outdone yourself. Oh, no, don’t mention it. But how remarkable! I mean really don’t mention it, I thought I was done with this shit. Makes a man want to die again.'
There was a long silence from whoever had discovered him. Also not an uncommon reaction. David waved his free hand. 'Bug off. This is my afterlife. Get your own.'"

"The elderly woman three rows down stands and hesitates. 'Did you enjoy the film?' She asks, her old voice thin.
It takes Valentin a moment to realise she is speaking to him. He should lie, perhaps, but he doesn’t. 'It was too sad for me.'
She smiles. 'Not many men of your age would come to a movie like this.'
She’s a stranger, someone he will never see again. 'My girlfriend was Ingrid Luna’s biggest fan.'
The old woman’s expression turns sad, sympathetic. 'She is no longer with us?'
Of course, she would assume Valentin’s girlfriend was dead, and not that she and Valentin had simply broken up, or that her tastes in movies had changed. It is the more likely assumption, in this country. 'No.'”
