Danny can see ghosts. Plain as day, right in front him. He’s always been able to see them - it’s his gift. But if you ask him, it feels more like a curse.
When Rachel moved to Hawaii and Danny followed, he decided to hide his gift. If people or ghosts knew about it, they’d take advantage, they’d use him. And he was sick of that.
