It wasn't so strange that Thranduil would call him a friend. And yet the word seemed to draw them closer like a length of string, binding them together, yet still so fragile.
[In which Thranduil and Bard begin writing each other letters over the long winter after the battle.]

Summary
“King Thranduil, have you seen him?” Bard asked frantically to an elf perched on a ruin, helmet in his arms.
“No?” He replied, clearly confused by his obvious worry – after all, why should a man be so worried about the Elvenking. Bard really didn’t want to analyse that right now. Especially as he didn’t know where Thranduil was.
He’d seen Thranduil fight, it was a thing of beauty. Bard hadn’t known anyone, even an elf, could be so gracefully deadly on the battlefield, surely no one had managed best the lethal Elvenking. But they had been so outnumbered. He could’ve been surrounded.

"The knock on the door came exactly 15 minutes before Bard was expecting it. Of course he currently had his hands full trying to finish dinner and keep 3 year old Tilda’s high-chair from tipping, as well as loudly telling Bain not to ‘tip his juice cup like that or it would spill’. "

Summary
An isolated life in a too-small cottage was never what Bard dreamed of for his children – especially sharp, scholarly Tauriel and sensitive, insightful Tilda. But school is a distant dream for a large family living off the land – at least until a storm and the subsequent house fire bring a former scholar to their doorstep.
Wealthy recluse Thranduil could never have anticipated leaving his family's manor for a shack in the woods and a single father with five – FIVE – children who can barely write ten words between them. But when disaster strikes, he is left with little choice – and maybe close quarters with a handsome widower won't be so bad after all...

Summary
It is a well-guarded secret of the elves of Middle Earth that they are born dreamers. Not dreamers in the way of man, with their conjured visions of the future, nor of the dwarves with their relentless pursuit of treasures. No, every elf is a dreamer in that they lead two lives, one in the waking world, and the other in their unique dreamscape. Guarded sanctuaries, none may enter these dreamscapes without explicit permission. This is a fact accepted amongst all the elves, and broken one battle weary night by a single unassuming man.
Faced with desolation in both the waking world and in the dreams plaguing Bard since the Battle of The Five Armies, the bowman does everything he can to bring life back to where it was lost. Though he may be called king in the waking world, it's the dead land of his dreams that accept his touch like it wishes to be fixed. Satisfactory in way delegation simply isn't, his nightly work is only enhanced by the dreamt up presence of Mirkwood's Elvenking. Yet as he grows close to Thranduil while sleeping, the lines between dreaming and reality begin to blur.

[Formerly titled "An Unexpected Meeting" but I changed it, fortunately!]
“I'm so sorry,” Bard repeats, unable to think rationally.
“It seems that you are, indeed, because you have already said so,” the stranger replies, a quiet smile on his pink-painted lips.
Bilbo would clearly know what shade of pink it is because he knows the difference between bubble-gum pink, raspberry pink or powder pink but Bard has no idea.
“I wet your dress,” Bard says piteously. He can’t take his eyes off the stranger, captivated by the features of his face.
“I noticed that,” the man replies and Bard can feel the smile in his deep voice, which contrasts so much with his delicate appearance. His eyes meet the stranger’s: they are pure blue, lighter than the ocean. -
