    Summary

Smell is an interesting thing, as far as senses go. He learned in undergrad anatomy that it’s actually responsible in part for encoding memory, and it’s a powerful trigger for it. Alex has experienced this plenty of times; his mother’s perfume reminding him of their years in Texas, his father’s cigars. This time, with the smell of this room, Alex is hit square in the chest with the memory of short blonde strands of hair sliding between his fingers, a perfect mouth opening against his own, a smooth accent curving a dulcet voice that whispers into his ear. Alex is spinning suddenly, as though he’s in midair and falling, and the nostalgic feeling in his chest is replaced with something far more intense and less pleasant. Alex steps backwards suddenly out of the room and slams the door shut, his breath shuddering and fast, and he rakes his hands through his dark curls as he storms off down the hallway.

Alexander Claremont-Diaz returns to the White House the first day of his presidency, intent on carving a new future for America and laying the ghosts of the previous administration to rest. He stumbles on a ghost of his own, one that's never quite stopped haunting him since the summer of his mother's second campaign.

    Summary

Henry begins to gingerly remove the bandage, sucking in a small breath as it pinches his skin. With one side of the tape unsealed, he pulls the rest of the material back and freezes in place.

For a moment, he thinks this is just some kind of sick nightmare, so he reaches down to pinch his thigh, but nothing happens. Where his soulmark used to be, is now only a line of stitches, held tightly together by a bunch of steri-strips.

“Does it… make you frightened about your soulmate? Or add more stress for you to find… them?”

Alex runs a hand through his hair and stops at his neck, squeezing. The pressure keeps him held together as he listens to Henry’s breathing on the other end of the line. “A little. I don’t want to – I can’t get it wrong like they did. Not that I’m not happy to exist or whatever, but everything is so strained any time we’re all in the same fucking room. I just don’t want that.”

“I’m sure…” Henry hesitates. “I’m sure your soulmate will be the most wonderful thing, Alex. I can’t imagine anyone destined to be with you ever doing anything other than… well, other than loving you completely.”

    Summary

Henry stares at his family. Stares and stares and stares as their words settle in his mind and travel down to his heart, then further down over his ribs and over the soft ridge of his stomach to settle on that mark sitting on his hip.

It doesn't quite make sense, what they’re saying, because his mark has been public knowledge for at least twelve years now, having been leaked by a scumbag journalist, spying on him while he relaxed on a private beach with Pez when he was only twenty.

He’s all but resigned himself to the belief that his soulmate had decided he didn’t want him. And that’s fair, because he’s a bloody prince and not everyone is willing to subject themselves to that level of scrutiny. It’s fine. Acceptable. Henry’s accepted it and moved on.

    Only.
