It hadn’t even been 24 hours between the time that the bodies of Will Byers and Mike Wheeler were pulled out of Sattler’s Quarry. Just like that, the search parties commenced, funerals were planned, and the town mourned – ruminating on the loss of two young boys. Whispers made their way around the town and down the streets. Eventually, the rumors die down, and the town forgets. Most of the town.
Three years later, everything changes.

After graduation, Mike decides to stay in Hawkins. He's taking classes, writing stories, and working part-time, but he knows it isn't enough. With the help of the people of Hawkins, Mike finds the courage to leave and set off on his travels. He works, he writes, he sends letters, he meets new people, all before finally returning to the boy he called home.

Summary
Mike Wheeler is coming apart at the seams.
Home is no longer a place he wants to return to, his friends are slipping out of reach, and the numbness he carries feels heavier than grief ever did. Paired with a lost friend on an English project, Mike is forced into a quiet, uncomfortable proximity with the past he’s been avoiding.
Their time in the library is strained and careful, marked by silences. Mike doesn’t ask the right questions. He doesn’t look too closely at his own unraveling. He just keeps moving, even as the ground beneath him disappears.
As nights grow colder and choices grow more desperate, Mike finds himself pushed farther from home than he ever meant to go. In a town full of ghosts and half-forgotten dreams, two boys circle each other in the aftermath of everything they’ve lost, both convinced it’s safer not to want too much.

Summary
Halting his blubbing, Mike blinks his eyes back open and allows for his vision to adjust to the unreasonably bright light that’s still surrounding him. His head lolls to the side, vision still coming in and out of focus as he tries to take in the image in front of him, blocking out all of his other senses.
Mike squints and… Oh.
Okay—why is God the dictionary definition of the word 'gorgeous'?
OR: Upon getting his wisdom teeth removed, Mike Wheeler doesn't remember much of anything—including Will Byers, and the fact that they're married to each other. He still feels all the love and adoration he has for the man, though... so he can't be blamed if it all comes spilling out of him in one way or another.

“Noon,” Max corrected, as if she hadn’t only woken up thirty minutes before him.
“Wow,” he replied, squinting at the light. “Nobody thought to wake me?”
It happened casually after that, so casually it almost didn’t register at first. El laughed at something Lucas said, then turned toward Mike and leaned in, instinctively, easily, pressing a kiss to his lips like it was the most logical way to say good morning to him.

or: Mike and Will have been together for a year and a half when El comes back. The problem is, El assumes she and Mike are still together. The bigger problem is that Mike doesn’t realize Will thinks he might choose her.
