Summary
A happy ending depends on where you stopped the story. Wei Wuxian had never put much faith in such an idle saying.
But his story had ended over a decade ago, and the world had moved too far forward for him to find his own place. What use was a nightmares role in a time of peace, except to hide away and retreat from everyone else's happy ending?
It isn't upsetting. He has people in this world who love him, even if he can't be with them. And it's good, to be alone, figure out how the world has changed under his own standing. Honestly, he's fine alone.
Fortunately, the people who love him refuse to let him be lonely. And sometimes it takes a third chance for the souls to click back into place.
(The one where Wei Wuxian travels alone, only to find home in the place he never dared to hope for. Or alternatively, the one where Lan Zhan holds his soulmate and tells him he can stay.)

Every few months or so, another bright, young cultivator went on a suicide mission to defeat the feared Yiling Laozu, who has been locked in the Burial Mounds for the last sixteen years. None have succeeded. None have returned from the fateful trip, yet they continue to go in the hopes that maybe one day, someone would.
Jin Ling, now sixteen and officially an adult, was going to prove that he was worthy of his title of Jin Sect Heir. He was going to do the impossible and defeat the Yiling Laozu. He was going to Kill his Uncle.
He is then lost when he realizes that Wei Wuxian is nothing like the stories he's been told.
