Summary
Considerably before Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, or any of his prophets, met Mr Reed, a young Jehovah's Witness paid him a visit and tried to convince him of God's plan for an everlasting kingdom on earth and how he might find peace and comfort by joining their Bible study. Having been a keen theologian who was disillusioned and embittered following a significant personal loss, Mr. Reed's instinct is to shun his visitor and refuse to engage. However, his attention is caught by her naivety and innocence, and how she has been manipulated and controlled by what he considers to be a nonsense doctrine. He decides to befriend her and feign interest in her denomination while subtly attempting to undermine her faith but what starts as a sincere attempt to liberate her begins to morph into something else entirely. Initially resistant, she becomes receptive and turns to him to guide her in her first steps outside of the sheltered life she's known since birth. She thinks such an intelligent, experienced man will surely expand her horizons and open her up to a world of opportunities but power over another can be an irresistably intoxicating draught.

Summary
