He stumbles to his feet. His shoulder bruising again the frame of the bathroom door, he catches himself on the sink, flicks the light on with a trembling hand.
Two eyes stare back, sunken in a bloodless face. Red-rimmed, blood beading on ruined lips. Sweat-crusted hair.
Two slender, pointed ears.
He presses his hand to his mouth as he heaves. He bends over the sink, dribbling bile down the drain, and in the silver of the plug he sees himself—stretched and bloated and grotesque in the swollen surface, and—
Small. Like this. Shrunken down in the edges of the drain’s curve, the ears twitch, and turn. He reaches up to them with shaking hands. He watches the tip of them, a centimeter away.
On the edge of the sink, metal gleams.
Scissors.

Paul had heard about it from Tara. And Tara had heard it from Groovy Bob, and he had heard it from one of his other artsy friends.
Apparently John had been fooling around with men.
Paul didn’t buy it. Not really. It was just too out of character, too absurd to be true. The thought of it—John with another man—it was ridiculous, wasn’t it?

Rumours were going around about John—and Paul just needed him to say they weren’t true.
He hadn't expected them to be.
It never made the papers. But things spiralled, all the same—just between them. And Paul wasn’t sure whether he could handle it all.
